One of the first weapon flashlights was designed by Hans Urban in 1876. This flashlight was called the "Urban Light." It consisted of a small battery operated light that could be worn on the person's belt. The light would be turned on by pulling the trigger, and it would emit a beam of light that could be seen up to 50 feet away. The next major development in weapon flashlight design came with the invention of the "Stove Top Flashlight" by John Browning in 1911. This flashlight had a small candle-style bulb that was used to project an orange or red light up to 100 feet away. It also had a built-in timer so it could be set for specific lengths of time before needing to be recharged. In 1935, another prominent inventor, Clarence Darrow, invented the "Darrow Pistol Flashlight." This flashlight consisted of two AA batteries that were connected together through an infra-red connector. The user could control both the intensity and direction of the beam using this connector. In addition, this flashlight could also be powered from outside sources such as a radio telescope or an electric power plant. Then in 1938, something amazing happened: Weaponflashlights became portable! The first post office was established in 1835. The town began as a agricultural community and has since become a major food production center for the eastern seaboard. Smithfield products include pork, beef, poultry, eggs, cheese, and flour. The company also manufactures Thomasville machinery and has operations in 15 states across the United States. In 2007-2008, Smithfield became one of only two towns in North Carolina to be selected for the prestigious National Park Service "National Historic Landmark" designation for its importance as an agricultural center during the colonial period. The town was founded on May 10th, 1835 when James Smith set up his own farmstead on what are now known as Farm Road 576 and Old Rag Road (now US Highway 411). At that time there were only four families living in what would later become Smithfield: Mr. John Singleton’s family with their six children; Mr., Mrs., & Children of Drury & Blythe; Ebenezer Evans with his three families plus eight slaves; Isaac Newton with five families including himself and six slaves; Solomon Palmer had one family but operated a mill on Little Hance creek which he left to develop into a village called Pleasant Hill downstream from present day Catawba county line south to present day Jonesboro northward along I-95W service road until it crossed NC 421 near Hendersonville today's Hawkins Mill Dam off I-95W just outside of Jonesboro east towards Roanoke Rapids where it joins I-95W just past Hendersonville today's Hawkins Mill Dam about 8 miles west of Roanoke Rapids according to research done by local historian Donnie Naylor available online atwww .ncthernelandhistory .com/ history/northcarolina/historic_places_and_trees/smithfield James Smith started out all alone here! He bought some eighty acres from Ebenezer Evans back then for $10 per acre!
