NATTC's primary purpose was to promote sales of cigars by helping members carry out marketing campaigns throughout their industrieside markets; however, membership also allowed FORD TOBACCO CO.(a wholly owned subsidiary) to sell cigarettes directly to consumers without having any dealings with NATTC members! In 1955 NATTC changed its name to THE AMERICAN TABACO COMPANY(ATT). By this time both FORD AND JONES & SONS had been eliminated from market share due largely to rising competition from RUBY BANKS CORP.(a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Morris USA)(PMUSA), which had just entered the tobacco industry! However, ATT would still help its members conduct marketing campaigns within their industrieside markets...against PMUSA!!! By 1973att had become part of BATF(the predecessor organization thereto renamed BATFE) following approval by Congress Of an emergency rule change increasing regulation surrounding cigarette advertising and promotion! While some aspects remain unchanged today - such as support for anti-smoking initiatives - most regulatory changes during this time came about because OF ALL ENTITIES IN THE INDUSTRY BATFE WAS CONSIDERED TO BE LEADER AND THIS WAS TRUE WITH RESPECT TO TABACO PRODUCTS AS A MATTER OF PUBLIC SAFETY!! Consequently,...in 1978batf initiated a full scale investigation into JONES & SONS after complaints were received about ads promoting cigarettes containing levels of nicotine that exceeded those currently allowed for TV commercials!!!! After interviewing more than 100 individuals who claimed they had experienced negative health effects from watching television advertisements featuring large amounts of nicotine...batf determined that no harm resulted from these products but rather they were being used safely for entertainment purposes!!!!! This investigative process cost att approximately $3 million dollars!!! Despite this setback,...att continued operation until 1987 when it merged wit BROWNSTEIN CORPORATION(Brownstein Bros.) BATFE conducted raids against Brownstein Bros.(often times resulting in confiscation/destruction of product)...but ultimately decided notTo pursue any criminal charges against them!!! Some might say this outcome reflected adversely upon BATFE's image as being soft on crime...others might claim that brownstein was simply too big and successful an entity To be successfully prosecuted??? RegardlessOfThe ultimate Decision made BY BATFE...it Was A major blow To JONES & SONS!!!!
