Smithfield is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is home to the world's largest pork product auction and the annual First Baptist Church fair.

Today, Smithfield is one of BRC's largest members and its primary business is export trade in textiles and apparel.
Smithfield was a slaveholding community in the state of North Carolina. It is located on the Nashua River, about 25 miles northeast of Raleigh and 12 miles west of Charlotte. The town was founded in 1801 by John Smith, an enslaved African American who worked as a farm hand for white farmers. Smithfield became a major slave trade center during the antebellum period, and its slaves were used to cultivate tobacco, produce crops such as corn and potatoes, and labor on plantations in the surrounding area. In 1828, Smithfield was acquired by Captain Robert Epps Jr., a white farmer who had purchased confiscated slaves from Dr. J.B. Henshaw in nearby Rowan County. After Plantation life ended in North Carolina following Reconstruction, Smithfield gradually declined until it ceased to be an agricultural village in the early 21st century.
