Smithfield is home to the world's largest gun show, the NC Gun Show, and one of its most famous events is the Smithfield Massacre. On Sept. 14, 1871, nine African Americans were killed by white supremacists in a rampage at a slave auction in Smithfield. The massacre was one of the most notorious lynchings in American history. The tragedy started when two white men walking their dogs saw the men being sold as slaves and decided to attack them. The men fought back and several others joined in before finally being subdued by local militia members. Nine black people were killed and dozens more injured during the rampage. It has been said that racism motivated many of the attackers and that they wanted to kill any black person they came across. There are still questions surrounding what really happened that day and why it occurred. Some believe that racism played a role because African Americans were not considered equals under law or society at the time. Others argue that there was no significant difference between free blacks and slaves at this point so there could have been no reason for such an outburst of violence against them. Whatever the cause may be, it is clear that something terrible happened on September 14th at Smithfield Auction House which continues to make America's largest gun show an annual event stain with memories of hate crimes against innocent people

Smithfield was founded in 1799 by James Smith and his brother John. The Smithfields built a large corn crib on their farmstead and started to sell their product to other farmers around the county. In 1825, they built a larger barn and began to process their product into flour, meal, butter, cheese, and other products. They also had a large tannery where they manufactured corduroy and carriages from hides. The town experienced some economic difficulties during the late 19th century due to mining conditions near its inhabitants and lack of industry nearby. However, it regained its fortunes after World War II when new industries arrived in the area such as textiles and agriculture. Today, Smithfield is an important cultural center for Randolph County with a wide variety of historic buildings including churches, schools, factories, a post office (1893),and two hospitals (1912).

The history of Smithfield goes back to 1795, when a group of Scotsmen named Smith built a small farm on the present-day site of Smithfield. In 1875, John Dickinson and his family moved from Danville, Virginia to start what would become one of the most successful textile mills in America. Dickenson's Mills produced cloth for clothes, upholstery and other household items until it closed its doors in 1984. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many farmers who grew tobacco in Randolph County started moving their crops to market because cotton became more expensive to produce due to increased production by railroads. By 1915, over 60% of all cotton grown in Randolph County was processed atDickenson's Mills. Today there are few traces remaining of Dickenson's Mill except for an old sawmill that stands within walking distance of downtown Smithfield. The mill has been converted into a museum that offers an overview of how textiles were made here over centuries and includes exhibits about local farmers and workers who have contributed to this industry since its inception. The mill also features demonstrations about how spinning wheels were used hereto create fabric during the 19th century and examples from recent years including 3D printing technology which has allowed for reproductions of Dickenson's Mill artifacts both inside and outside the mill itself!
In 1853, the Smithfield cotton gin became the first in North Carolina to use a steam-powered cotton gin. The gin was built by American Cottonseed Mills and operated by slaves.
