Smithfield, North Carolina is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. The first rifle stocks were built in Smithfield by George Washington in 1775 during the American Revolution. Rifle stocks continued to be made in Smithfield until the late 1800s when they became less common and were replaced by shotguns. In 1876, a company called The Benjamin Ladd Rifle Works was formed in Smithfield and began producing rifles under the name John Brown & Sons. This company continued to produce rifles until 1927 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Corporation. In 1938, Winchester Corporation merged with Colt Firearms Company to form Colt Incorporated. In 1957, Colt Incorporated was acquired by Nike Corporation and Nike discontinued manufacturing of handguns and other firearms within their corporation; this left Smithfield as the sole manufacturer of rifle stocks for sporting purposes outside of ammunition sales only for hunting animals such as deer or hogs. Today, rifle stocks are still produced by various companies throughout the world but most production takes place within individual countries such as America (Winchester), Canada (Beretta), Italy ( Sig Sauer ), Spain ( Martini-Henry ) and Japan ( Marui).
