In 1865, Smithfield became one of two towns in Surry County to secede from Virginia and join North Carolina as a result of the American Civil War. At that time it had a population of only 100 people but by 1870 it had grown to 2,500 residents following the opening of new factories and mills in nearby Durham and Newton counties. During this time there were also significant African American settlement within what would become Smithfield; prior to 1865 most African Americans lived in Durham or Newton counties outside the bounds of white society. Smithfield is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield began as a small settlement on the eastern edge of what is now Robeson County in 1792 and was named for John Smith, an early settler. The first store in Smithfield was built by James Caldwell in 1814. A post office was established at Smithfield in 1824 and remained until it was discontinued in 1881. In 1865, Alexander Henderson opened a shoe store near the junction of U.S. Routes 129 and 222 near present-day Interstate 85 Exit 107A. That year, Henderson became the first white person to be arrested for violations of Reconstruction Era United States Constitution provisions forbidding slavery within Confederate lines In 1870, J C Caldwell's son John C Caldwell Jr., took over running his father's business from his father's home on Market Street (now Main Street). In 1875, John C Caldwell Sr.'s widow died leaving him with two children: John C Caldwell III (1876-1957) and Myron Fenton Caldwell (1879-1964). After their mother's death they moved to nearby Norwood where they continued to operate their business until 1951 when it closed due to Union Carbide Company's consolidation into DuPont Company In 1952, George W Hargrave donated land south of I-85 which became known as "Hargrave Field". The company erected a 3 story building that became known as "The Hargrave Store." On July 8th 1957 George W Hargrave passed away and his wife Betty sold her share of the business to her nephew Floyd Laughlin who operated it until he retired in 1984 In 1984 David Laughlin bought out Floyd Laughlin's shares and reopened the store under the name "Smithfield Joe". For many years this operation served as the only source of fresh produce for people living near I-85 between Charlotte/Mecklenburg County north and east and Johnston/Robeson County westward . From 1998 through 2007 it also hosted an annual summer farmers market which attracted more than 2 million shoppers On October 12th 2008 Hurricane Irene caused extensive damage to downtown Smithfield including most of The Hargrave Store roofing being replaced with metal mesh after large rain pours throughout several hours that caused extensive flooding inside followed by wind chills reaching -40 degrees F outside causing significant power outages throughout much of southeast North Carolina . Around midnight EST October 12th both stores were fully flooded following heavy rains overnight with water up to waist level inside both stores making entry difficult despite pumps kicking in inside each store multiple times during deepwater flooding resulting total loss amounting to $100K per store not including lost merchandise valued at over $2M dollars The floodwaters receded late Saturday morning but left behind extensive damage across all levels affecting every inch or surface area inside both stores totaling almost 5 acres with more than 100 businesses losing property valued at more than $15M dollars along with nearly 200 homes that were either destroyed or damaged beyond repair . More than 10 thousand people were evacuated from areas around downtown including about 7500 trucks carrying food supplies
