From 1858 to 1861, Daniel Boone worked as a laborer at the mill while attend school in nearby Rocky Mount and later taught at Presbyterian College here before moving to Smithfield to start his own small business having learned English from his tutor at college Samuel Eaton baptized by John Sevier when he founded what would become Rocky Mount Baptist Church there on October 6th of that year- this event being recorded in local history books as "Daniel Boone's Baptism Site" In 1876 Jno Coker's son Jacob ran for office as a Democrat against incumbent Republican James L UNCUTTER but lost handily despite numerous challenges from wealthy farmers and industrialists throughout the county including one challenge from newly elected Governor John Heard himself In 1924 Fenton Hedges opened up an elevator company called Hedges Elevator Company which quickly became one of the most successful firms in North Carolina due to its innovative elevator designs In 1955 Rufus Hoke became mayor of Pender County after serving two terms as assistant district attorney general under then-Governor Lenoir Hunt Hoke made progressivism a key part of his political career by becoming chairman of the state Democratic Party chairmanship prior to winning election as governor in 1978 after defeating incumbent Phil Berger Hoke also served two terms as speaker of the house before leaving politics to run for lieutenant governor in 1984 which he won After leaving office he retired back into farming until his death aged 97 years old on November 9th 2006

The town grew rapidly during the American Civil War and was one of the most important Confederate supply ports. After the war, Smithfield developed into an agricultural center with large plantations still working as slaves until abolition in 1865. In 1978, Smithfield became an independent city after being annexed by Durham.

The area that now includes Smithfield was first settled by Native Americans, who lived there for centuries. In 1675, English colonists built a fort at what is now called Fort Duquesne on the North Carolina side of the Potomac River. The fort served as a trading post between British traders and the Powhatan people. In 1787, John McCain started farming in what is now Smithfield. He and his brother James bought land from some Cherokee Indians who had been living there for years. TheMcCain brothers were among the earliest settlers in North Carolina. They opened a store in what is now downtown Smithfield and began to sell goods to local residents and farmers. In 1827, John McCain married Sarah Troupes, one of the daughters of Captain Thomas Troupes, an American Revolutionary War officer who fought at Yorktown Heights near Richmond Virginia. Sarah Troupes helped run John McCain's store until her death in 1881. She is buried at nearby Mount Zion Cemetery
