Smithfield is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Fort Mill metropolitan area. Smithfield is also the home of Smithfield Foods, one of the largest food processors in the world. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1799 and became a county seat in 1828. It was renamed Smithfield after General Samuel Ewing Smith (1802-1868), who donated land to the town for use as a military post during the American Civil War. The current nameplate on modern buildings dates back to 1922 when it was changed from "Smithfield" to "Smith's Mills". A major employer in Smithfield are its four large hog farms—the most important being Wrightsville Farms—which produce more than 1 million hogs per year and employ over 140 people. Other significant employers include PNC Banknorth, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company, and Allied Chemical Corporation. In addition to these larger employers, there are many small businesses which contribute significantly to local economies with their jobs within agriculture or related industries. These businesses include: an ice cream parlor; a bakery; two grocery stores; two farm Bureau stores; three Machine Shop stores; a feed mill; and seven churches (two Baptist and six Methodist). The town has been known for its traditional Fine Arts Festival since 1978 which features paintings, sculptures and other art displays from throughout North Carolina plus music from local bandshells on Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening. There are also several agricultural exhibits each summer that focus on specific themes such as poultry production or horticulture
