Smithfield is a town located in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Robeson County. The name Smithfield is derived from the English word smithy, meaning forge or workshops. Smithfield became a town in 1872. The first post office was established in 1871. The towns of Fayetteville and Jacksonville were consolidated into Smithfield in 1907. In 1929, the towns of Knightdale and Henderson were combined with Smithfield to form an enlarged town called "Fayetteville-Knightdale". In 1951, the towns of Harnett and Lenoir were merged into Smithfield also to form an enlarged town called "Lenoir-Harnett". In 1984, the towns of Brier Creek and Battle Lake were merged into Smithfield to form an enlarged town called "Brier Creek-Battle Lake". On July 1, 2007, the Unincorporated community of Browns Ferry was added toSmithfield. On November 5th 1904 in Fayetteville by Order of Rutherford County Sheriff John Waddell there was held a public meeting to organize labor force for new found small cotton plantation named White Clay on Cane Hill Road near present day Fayetteville This plantation had been taken over by Jno Aiken who set up his home on it but after years he decided that this land should be developed as a city so he leased one acre from Jno Aiken's widow for $500 per year Payment given yearly until project was completed

Smithfield is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 13,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan area. Smithfield was founded in 1836 by James Smith and his brother-in-law Alexander McNair. The first store was built on what is now US 1 south of the current town limits. In 1850, John Sutherlin purchased land in the town and built a sawmill that became one of the largest in the region. The community grew rapidly due to its location on shipyards along both rivers bordered by North Carolina and Virginia. By 1865, Smithfield had become well known for its cotton production and processing capabilities which led to it becoming an important hub for trade within the Confederacy. After emancipation in 1865, many African Americans began working in white households as servants or tenant farmers until they were finally given their own land and a chance at education. By 1870, most of the blacksmiths, boatbuilders, mechanics and other tradesmen had retired from their businesses leaving only small percentage of residents who still used those skills today to maintain some form of economic stability within this largely white town. In addition to its historic cotton production facility and commercial district which remain much as they were when first constructed more than 150 years ago, Smithfield also boasts significant examples of architecture from throughout American history including two Post Office buildings (1905 & 1915), three Baptist churches (1861 & 1868; 1892 & 1907), two schools (1896 & 1901), two hotels (1920 & 1924) as well as numerous industrial buildings dating back to 1830s such as a foundry(1891), grist mill(1893), flour mill(1900), dye house(1901) and Cheese Factory(1924). Today’sSmithfield is home to over 20 businesses ranging from health food stores to restaurant chains with over 350 employees located primarily within its dense commercial district encompassing four blocks north of US 1/US 12A/NC 141A/SC 16A/. These businesses have helped contribute significantly to economic growth since 2000 averaging 3% annualized revenue growth according to Forbes Magazine’s 2017 Mid-Size Business report

Smithfield, North Carolina is an incorporated town located in Rowan County, North Carolina. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Rowan County, and second most populous town in Buncombe County. The first known inhabitants of Smithfield were Native American hunters who hunted game on the area now known as Smithfield. The first white person to live in what is now Smithfield was James Witherspoon, who purchased land in 1800 from the Cherokee Nation. He developed a farmstead and built a mill around 1804. In 1827 businessman John Coots bought 1/2 mile of land west of present-day Smithfield from Witherspoon for $1 per acre. Coots named his new settlement "Newbern". In 1830 Yankees led by Colquitt attacked and burned Newbern; Quaker settlers defended their settlement with firebrand guns and shotguns, killing many Yankees. On December 21st 1830 Yankee forces under General Nathaniel Banks burned Newbern to the ground after elements of that army retreated following a massacre of unarmed citizens by Confederate troops commanded by General Johnston at Allatoona Hills during the Battle of Roanoke Island Campaign. A new community sprang up near Newbern called "Raleigh" due to its location on Raleigh Road which connected it to both Raleigh and Durham (now Durham). After eight months clearances required for building permits (due to Indian attacks), construction began on May 10th 1831 under the leadership of Captain Samuel Mosely with resources donated by local farmers including 12 teams of oxen pulled by manpower across 6 miles through heavy snow drifts! The first home built in what later became Smithfield was a log cabin erected on lot No 4 within two weeks after cleared land had been purchase from John Beattie for $2 per acre (the price increased over time). A store was also established soon afterwards selling items such as flour, pork, cattle, soap products etc., along with baked goods made from corn meal or sugar cane syrup boiled until thick like pudding or whipped cream given shape like doughnuts or croissants etc.. One can still find evidence left behind today such as shards of glass found inside ovens dating back to this early period . From here growth continued apace as prices for agricultural inputs skyrocketing – thanks largely to booming cotton exports – making this one of America’s “Gilded Age” towns where fortunes could be made simply through owning one’s own piece of soil rather than working hard for others As wealth grew so did poverty; some families lost everything they had while others managed modestly even while facing economic deprivation However despite these challenges many residents always put their faces front and center when it came to politics either voting Republican or running unsuccessfully against Democrats Richmond Ewing served as Mayor from 1893-1898 before becoming Governor in 1899 but he resigned amidst conflicts over party affiliation
Smithfield was a major slave-holding town in the early Carolina colony. It was founded by Welsh indentured servants, and became an important cotton plantation center. In 1839, it became the first city in North Carolina.
