Smithfield was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1798 as a small log cabin community on the banks of the James River. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and by 1824 it had a school, store, and post office. In 1831 the town passed an ordinance establishing a Masonic Lodge and banning slavery. By 1840 Smithfield's population had reached 10,000 people. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1851; however, it resumed growth and by 1860 it had over 20 buildings including four churches and two hospitals. In 1861 Smithfield became the site of what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations; known as Johnston Plantation until 1865 when it was purchased by John Fayette Johnston Jr., founder of UNC Chapel Hill (the university). Over time Johnston Plantation has been used for many purposes including residential development (e.g., Charlotte Oaks), livestock production (e.g., Oak Ridge Farms), research/testing center for new drugs or technologies (e.g., DuPont Research Laboratories), and tourism (e.g., Blue Ridge Parkway). The large cotton fields that were located around Johnston Plantation have since been replaced with housing developments such as Pinehurst Park or Laurel Lakeshore which are located near several universities in Raleigh–Durham area such as Duke University or Wake Forest University among others
