The Smithfield gun company was founded in 1887 by George Smith and Gustavus Beasley. The company manufactured firearms, shotguns, handguns, and rifle parts. In 1888, the company began manufacturing handguns. The handguns were designed to be easy to operate andfired quickly due to their small size. In 1911, the Smithfield gun company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company. At this time, Winchester also became the majority shareholder in the Smithfield gun company. As a result of this merger, Winchester became controlling shareholder in both companies. This gave them an advantage over their competitors who were still trying to develop new products forSmithfieldguncompany customers During World War II, Smithfield produced guns for numerous Allied forces including United StatesAAF (USAAF) bombers and naval vessels. Gun production continued until 1946 when it was discontinued due to wartime restrictions on arms production

Smithfield is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Craven County. Smithfield is named after Colonel John Smith, an early settler and one of the original incorporators ofCraven County. The town was first settled in 1785 by Captain James Johnston and his family from Scotland. They started a small trading post on the present site of Smithfield in 1786. Captain Johnston's son Alexander founded the city of Raleigh, North Carolina in 1827 as a port for goods arriving from Georgia and the Carolinas. Raleigh soon became too large for Johnston's small community and he sold his interests there to Aiken entrepreneur James Mosely in 1829. Mosely renamed the city Smithfield after himself because he had bought all of Raleigh's land nearby including what is now downtown Smithfield. In 1845, General Robert Ewell decided that Durham would be the new capital of North Carolina due to its location at the junction of two major highways-the older route via NC 122 to Charlotte while newer Route 7 led eastward from Durham to Raleigh- so he ordered General Alpheus Swayne to fortify Durham against possible attack by Confederate forces under Lt.-Gov.(and future Confederate President) Tyrone Swain Jr.. On July 6th, 1845 Swayne's garrison surrendered without battle or resistance when Union troops arrived with orders not to resist – this event marks turningpoint in American Civil War history leading up to surrender at Appomattox Court House (April 9th 1865). From here on out most events were indirect as Confederate General Braxton Bragg moved his army deeper into Northern territory until it finally surrendered at Murfreesboro on April 9th 1865 just days before Robert Ewell's famous "Gettysburg Address" which ended warfare in America once and for all

The L&M reached London in 1859, becoming one of the first railways in Europe. In 1865, Samuel Colt manufactured his first revolver.
Smithfield is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pitt County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,724 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Chapel Hill–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is named for John Smith, an early settler and planter. Smithfield is located on the Yadkin River southeast of downtown Chapel Hill and north of Durham. The first settlers to what is now Smithfield were humans who traveled down the Yadkin River in search of new land to farm. By 1785, there were twenty-six families living in twelve homes near present day Smithfield. In 1828, Major General Nathaniel Pendergast founded the First Baptist Church at present day Smithfield after being impressed by its sermon on providence which he had heard from a Methodist preacher while traveling through North Carolina." According to local history books, many important moments in town's history have taken place during military campaigns including two major Confederate skirmishes fought here: Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of Tarletonville. Additionally, during World War II when the United States Military occupied much of these same areas as part of your country’s effort against Adolf Hitler’s Germany, many factories such as Ford Motor Company and DuPont produced munitions here that helped make America victorious over Nazi Germany. Today's community started off small when John Smith founded it in 1828; his original home cost $5 per acre to purchase. Today SmithFIELD has more than 8500 residents within its boundaries!
