The first white European to settle in what is now Smithfield was Capt. John Smith, who arrived in 1738. He built a cabin on the present site of town and named it "Smithfield." In 1741, he married Rebecca Gentry and started an agricultural business near what is now downtown Smithfield. By 1800, John and Rebecca had six children: John, Jr., James, Sarah (Fletcher), Sally (Norman), Thomas (Thorne) and Nancy (Newell). John Newell founded the paper mill in 1814 along with his brothers-in-law Amos Kendall and Nicholas Flournoy. The mill became one of the largest cotton mills in America by 1830. It produced more than 12 million pounds of cotton cloth per year from 1814 to 1850. The Newells also operated a sawmill and gristmill during this time period. The mill burned down on October 8, 1854, when a fire broke out in the Foundry building which caused extensive damage inside and outside the mill structure. The loss was estimated at $5 million dollars at that time(). In1860, Henry Clay took over as president of United States; he ordered that all mills be shut down until new legislation could be passed related to tariffs being placed on British goods entering America by way of South Carolina because those goods were deemed unfair competition against American producers such as Daniel Webster's father-in-law Samuel Slater's tannery company operating out of Augusta across from Charleston Harbor). This order led to production restarting at the Slater Tannery after several years' absence due to wartime restrictions on tanning products exported from America). After Clay's death in 1865 his widow Wright succeeded him as President pro tempore for 14 days before becoming acting president until Vice President Gideon Welles could take office on November 3rd (). On January 6th 1865 Wright finally became acting president after Welles resigned due to health problems.. On May 25th 1865 Union General Sherman destroyed most or all of Slater Tannery complex including its brick works buildings after withdrew operations throughout Confederacy following successful raid near Savannah Tennessee called Overland Expedition

In 1850, General Military Governor James Kenedy arrived at Smithfield to assess damage done during a recent civil war between Confederate forces and Union troops under Robert Easley. Kenedy pronounced Smithfield "the most destroyed place on our continent." He ordered all citizens to rebuild their homes within two weeks or face military occupation. In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Captain John Broughton established what is now known as Broughton Brewery in Smithfield for promotional purposes only (it ceased operations in 1870). A few years later JB&Q stores began operation throughout Gaston County; these were eventually replaced by Walmart Supercenters when that company took over grocery shopping operations statewide in 2008-2009
