After General Ewell's capture, many rich people moved into nearby Grovetown and began developing their land within what is now downtown Smithfield. During this time period, many farmers also started moving into what is now northeast Cabarrus County because it had become available from early development along I-95 corridor northward (the so-called "Rich Row"). Many businesses were established in these areas such as J H Steele & Sons grocery store (now defunct), Ford’s Pawn Shop (now defunct), Waffle House (now not open), Masonic Temple (closed down) Eventually much of what exists today within eastbound I-95 corridor northward became developed including Downtown/Smithfield Historic District which contains over 100 contributing buildings dating back to 1800s when this area included much agricultural land but also saw rapid growth during 19th century because it served as distribution center for several major railroads including NC Central Railroad
