Smithfield is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is located west of Interstate 95 and east of the Charlotte-Fort Mill beltway. The first white settlers in what is now Smithfield arrived in 1795. They were led by Major John Smith, who had earlier explored and surveyed the area for the nascent American Revolutionaries. In 1801, General James Kenedy founded Kenedy's Ferry on Cedar Creek to transport goods from Wilmington to Charlotte. One year later, General Thomas Jernigan established a post here called Fort Mecklenburg on high ground near present-day Glenwood Springs Road and Spring Hill Avenue. A store and sawmill were built here in 1805; it was renamed Fort Mecklenburg after Johnston's victory over Native Americans at Battle of Bladensburg that same year. In 1830, local resident Amos Hargrave began leasing land northwest of town to establish what would become Smithfield College (now UNC Chapel Hill). Hargrave donated more than 1,000 acres (400 ha) of his farmsteads to UNC Chapel Hill in memory of his wife Lucy Hargrave Macaulay (1792-1843), an early figure in women's education and one of America's most accomplished educators. On April 30, 1830 – three days before UNC Chapel Hill opened its doors for classes – students from nearby Lenoir County gathered at Hargrave's farmstead for a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony that marked the beginning of what would become one of America's most renowned educational institutions. The college became operational within weeks as separate buildings – including its first classroom – were erected on campus across from today’s Main Building on Dean Street near today’s Lawn Tennis Courts . In 1840, following increased traffic along I-95 northward through Henderson County and ensuing development around Fort Mecklenburgsee also outside Smithfield limits, some residents voted to incorporate their community into Henderson County as a proposed “new town” which they named "Smithfield". At first no action was taken due to lack thereof support but when county officials noted increasing growth within our boundaries they stages an referendum vote late last year calling for incorporation back into Henderson Counties pursuant to NCC law No 35 §1 et seq., this time with overwhelming support! After much debate between myself & commissioners we went ahead with incorporation giving 3/4ths approval (& all towns have since been annexed back into Henderson Counties) ensuring continued growth & vibrancy without Restrictions or Budgets being put forth whatsoever! Thank you everyone involved!!! OurTownshipName has finally been chosen...We are Smithfield!
