The Smithfield name comes from James Smith, who operated a small farm there from 1792 to 1847.

Smithfield was a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Yadkin River. Smithfield was founded in 1785 by James Smith and Other settlers from Virginia. It was named for Colonel John Smith of Hanover County, England who had come to America in 1763 as part of the British Invasion of North Carolina. In 1810, Colonel John Smith's son-in-law, Drury Lane developed what is now called "Drury Lane" which included much of what is now Smithfield. In 1831, John Randolph elected to become the first mayor of Smithfield after being chosen from among a group of men who had petitioned for the appointment by a vote of residents. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a city in 1836 but it declined due to lack of support from the county government. However, on July 15th 1870, they reincorporated as a town under charter number 929 issued by Governor Tryon Wokey with majority vote from all members of the Town Council except Mayor Randolph who abstained because he did not want his name on it In 1865 General Sherman destroyed most everything within easy view in order to make way for his march into Atlanta through Alamance County and nearby counties destroying homes and businesses without any notice or compensation to anyone involved save some very lucky few who were able to flee before anything bad happened After that event many people decided not to go back and there were only around 100 people living here when I took my first picture in 1984
The Smithfield family first settled in North Carolina in 1678. The site of their original plantation was on the east side of the Cape Fear River, about a mile from present-day Smithfield. The early Smithfields were subsistence farmers, raising livestock and hogs. They improved their land over time, becoming prosperous tobacco growers. In 1824, John C. Smith founded the First Baptist Church in Smithfield, which remains one of the largest churches in North Carolina today.
