The Smithfield Armory was a firearms manufacturer in Smithfield, North Carolina from 1855 to 1915. The company produced the first commercially successful repeating rifle, the Winchester Repeating Rifle, in 1855. It also manufactured handguns and shotguns. In 1915, the Smithfield Armory was sold to Remington Arms Company and closed down.

Smithfield is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small farming community near present-day Hickory Hill and was named after Smithfield Market in Lancaster, England. A post office called Smithfield was established in 1824, and the name was changed to McDowell in 1835. In 1857, the railroad arrived and changed the economy of the area by bringing people and goods to market from nearby Wilmington and Gaston counties. By 1870, when it became a city under charter, Smithfield had become one of the largest cotton towns in America with over 100 factories producing cloth and other goods for export. In 1925, General Motors Corporation built a plant on what is now downtown McDowell to produce Buick cars. GM closed its facility in 2006 but left behind an important legacy which still looms large overSmithfield: The original GM dealership building remains standing as one of only two remaining buildings from that time period remaining within McDowell County; it also houses several local businesses including The Olde Storey Trading Post restaurant & bar which has been open since 1926. Today's skyline features many examples of pre-bankruptcy American companies such as Home Depot Inc., Lowe's Companies Inc., Coca Cola Refreshments Company (the world's first bottled water company), FedEx Office Worldwide Air Cargo Co., Johnson Controls Incorporated (makers of home security systems) among others

But what if we told you that before there was any kind of firearms industry, there were actually firearm t-shirts? And they date back to the 1800s! The first known depictions of firearms on T-Shirts appeared in 1859 when an American soldier named John C. Frémont wore one on his uniform during the Mexican–American War. The design featured a single barrel rifle with an open stock and pistol grip, similar to how modern firearms are depicted today. It was likely inspired by Frémont's own personal weapon – his Colt revolver. Throughout the years, other military members and civilians have also worn clothing associated with firearms (or at least people who believed they did). In 1892, A&P gift store clerk Harry Pratt designed and printed the first handgun themed t-shirt for their customers. The shirts were decorated with various images of pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns - alluding to America's love affair with these weapons.

Smithfield was a slave-owning town in North Carolina, located near Raleigh. It was founded by John Smith in 1696 as part of the colony of Carolina. The town was named after the English market town of Smithfield, which had been established nearby in 1685. The first slaves were brought to Smithfield from neighboring Wilmington in 1710. At its peak, Smithfield had around 1,500 slaves and 10 free people living there. By 1800, however, Smithfield's slave population had decreased to 100 due to importation restrictions set by England. The remaining slaves were gradually emancipated over the next few decades. In 1831, the state of North Carolina abolished slavery and all other forms of involuntary servitude statewide. In retaliation for this move, several slaveowners in Smithfield fought a bloody civil war known as the "War Between the States." The war resulted in more than 200 dead and scores wounded; however, it ultimately failed to achieve independence for either side. Smithfield ultimately declined during Reconstruction following the end of slavery; though some small businesses continued to operate until after World War II. Today, much evidence remains that indicates how integral slave labor played in helping keep Raleigh economically afloat during its early years—including an abandoned cotton gin still standing today that was once used to produce raw cotton goods!
The Smithfield Plantation, located in North Carolina, was a plantation that operated from 1795 to 1865. The property was originally developed by the family of Colonel James Smith and is now part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
