Cranch purchased of land east of Durham for $1 million dollars to build a cotton gin and other plantations near present day Raleigh as part of hisEFB Plan to promote cotton production throughout North Carolina. The EFB included lands that would become Smithfield and Chapel Hill. Johnston's purchase enlarged Fayetteville plantation by . In 1840, Johnston founded the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now UNC-Chapel Hill) adjacent to Fayetteville Plantation with initial funding from the EFB planter families including those from Smithfield who donated land for a college campus. In 1845 Pemberton sold all remaining shares within EFB to James Buchanan Woodruff III for $10 milliondollar which became known as "The Woodruff Purchase". When Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, much of eastern North Carolina following suit lost its plantations including many belonging to Johnston or his family members including John Denton Sr., James Buchanan Woodruff III & their families who moved into Raleigh where they began business operations as businessmen under the name "Denton-Woodruff" enterprises until they were dissolved by law after World War II as well as any other businesses connected with Reconstruction finance activities in NC during that time period known as "Redemption Association". 2 853
