Smithfield is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Yadkin River and is the largest town in McDowell County by land area. Smithfield is located along I-95 south of Charlotte. The first people to live in this area were the Lenoirs who arrived around 1800. There are several theories as to how they got here: one suggests they rafted down the Yadkin River from Tennessee; another suggests that they traveled through what is now McDowell County on their way to North Carolina; still others believe they came overland from Tennessee and built a cabin on what is now Log Cabin Road. In 1827, John Ashe purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of forest land east of present day Smithfield from David Fenton for $10 per acre. This donation allowed Ashe to build his home at Nashborough which he called "Athens" after his native Athens, Greece. In 1830, when Sparta Plantation was founded by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Colonel James Mays Jr., it became an important center for slave trade because it had access to significant riverside areas near Matthews and Raleigh that supplied both slave traders and buyers with timber and other resources needed for constructing plantations northward into present day Virginia and Maryland. The wide expanse of open country across which those two settlements lay made it difficult for any one person or group of people to control much more than a small amount of territory within their own borders without beginning conflict with neighboring groups or villages or tribes who also traded with those faraway lands…. between 1829-1835 all but one out of eight thousand slaves brought into Georgia were transported through McDowell County during this period…. After free blacks began moving into southern Appalachia starting in about 1840, mostfree black households did not purchase slaves until after 1850….. Slavery continued until 1865 when all Confederate military personnel mustered out (except officers), including many white soldiers who retained their rights under Union law as citizens… By 1860 only 3% percent of all goods imported into the Confederacy went through McDowell County; however textile production accounted for almost 60%…." The history around Smithfield goes back before European exploration started here in 1776 when Captain John Smith explored this area looking for a new route to India On December 5th 1830 Indian trader David Fenton Axe donated 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast of present day Smithfield Rd/I-95 W just west off NC 77 to Nathaniel Lord Ashley For 10$ an acre Ashley donated land that would allow him build Athens home proper name changed 2 years later To Nashborough house long story short In 1837 major general Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 640 acres east off I-95 near modern day Matthews & Raleigh for $10 per acre he named Athena House after his Greek birthplace

Over time, however, pork productionaned until it became one of Smithfield's primary products In 1957-1959, efforts were made at nearby Raleigh to redevelop part of what had been known as 'the Pig Mill Site'. At this site there were two hogs every day being slaughtered which led to an increase in traffic around both sites; however there was no commercial development resulting from these projects
John Smithfield was born in the colony of North Carolina on October 1, 1724. He became a wealthy landowner and political figure in the area, playing an important role in the development of North Carolina. In 1775, John Smithfield helped lead a successful rebellion against British rule, leading to his own execution.
