Smithfield is a city in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 13,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cabarrus County. The city was founded in 1854 by Scots-Irish settlers from Ireland and named for General Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. Smithfield is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from Smithfield Market, which was located in the town center. The market operated until 1954. Smithfield is adjacent to Charlotte and Raleigh. The first settler to come to what is now Smithfield was James Biddle in 1793. He purchased of land from the Cherokee Indians and named his new settlement after William Smith, an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of Congress from Virginia who had died in 1794 while serving with General George Washington's troops on Long Island. By 1801, all of Gaston County had been acquired by North Carolina and James Biddle's land became part of Gaston Parish within that county. In 1813, Wm Jarratt developed a large cotton gin on the east side of the Anson River south of modern-day Carrboro as part of his effort to exploit this area for cotton production during what would be known as the Slave Trade Era. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Gaston County in early 1814 when Andrew Jackson was elected president and started construction on Jackson's famous White House on Millstream Road (later called Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). At that time there were only four or five families living in what are now Carrboro and surrounding areas; today there are over 20 thousand residents within a radius down to where Interstate 85 crosses Overstreet Rd./Route 7 just west of downtown Carrboro (the " Inner Loop"). When Andrew Jackson withdrew from office in1828 he sold most or all of his holdings including Jackson'sWhite House lands to John Marshall who renamed them Marshallown Plantation after himself but continued growing cotton until 1830 when he gave up ownership due to financial difficulties caused by trade restrictions placed upon him by British authorities following their victory at Yorktown marked the end of the American Revolution hostilities hereabouts." In 1830-31 Robert Ewell built a small frame courthouse near present day Carrboro High School which served as court house for many years before it burned down around 1840s/50s likely due to firefighting efforts being too expensively executed given available resources rather then focusing more productively on concerns about law enforcement response times which were improving under newly appointed sheriff David Beasley" In 1851 Elijah McCullough established a grist mill southwest cornerof present day Main Street & Tryon Avenue based upon McCormickan spinning technology utilizing water power with later steam engine operation; this mill still stands today providing long term staple flour service for Carrboro residents
