Smithfield is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,549 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Granville County. Smithfield is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The town was founded by settlers from Virginia in 1799 and named for Colonel John Smith (1752-1826). Smithfield was originally a small community on the north bank of the Yadkin River opposite present-day Greensboro. A steamboat landing was built in 1799 to service travelers along the river and early residents raised chickens, hogs, pigs, and cattle there. In 1807, a post office was established at Smithfield and remained in operation until 1925. The first store in Smithfield opened its doors on July 1, 1800, under license from Governor Tryon of North Carolina. The store traded goods including flour ground from wheat brought overland through Tennessee to Raleigh by wagon trainloads that had been unloaded at Fort Hill near what is now Columbia Cityamandae Creek. At first everything sold at public sale—guns and ammunition included—except rice which could only be bought by subscription or tickets from traders who also carried corn and other farm produce to market. By 1802 there were six stores open in town with an average of ten customers per day; three more stores opened between 1810 and 1830 when trade grew rapidly due to increased access to transportation linked by road with Middlesex County on one side and Iredell County on the other; as well as increased development around downtown: a Methodist Episcopal church (built c1811), school (1809), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1800), Baptist Church (founded c1800), mercantile warehouses Nos 2 (1810) & 3 (1820). In 1828 General James Pemberton defeated Samuel Johnston at Wagram Swamp while retreating after being soundly defeated at Battle of Kings Mountain two days earlier; this event helped spur shipments of foodstuffs coming downriver past New Bern into South Carolina due upriver to Redick’s Mills where they were processed into flour before being shipped downriver again for export This added stimulus helped make possible Cotton Kingdom – now known asNC’s largest agricultural center – beginning with planting out large fields southwest of town during fallow years before harvest starting in May As cotton prices rose during American Civil War efforts were made to raise money for Confederate forces through sales of supplies such as clothing etc., local merchants developed close relationships with Confederate officers/soldiers whose families used their businesses for purposes such as procurement items such as horses or supplies needed for warfare During Reconstruction period following end of Civil War most businesses closed but some reopened including Post Office which reopened February 1865 under new management After extensive damage done by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 much businessactivity ended with few remaining buildings still standing within township limits except one general store which closed December 14th 1999 having operated since 1896 A number churches were also damaged or destroyed during storm including First Methodist Church which sustained severe damage but still stands today At present only foundations remain both old Post Office building dating back to 1865 alongsidetheone built ca1980and Methodist Episcopal Church dating backto 1811

On May 20, 1903, George Washington Carver wrote in a letter to the editor of "The Saturday Evening Post" that he had developed a new way to kill small game with a rifle. The rifle was designed to be simple and efficient, capable of killing rabbits and other small animals at distances up to 150 yards. In 1936, the first airguns were invented by two brothers named John Fenton and Harry Morse. The brothers used an airgun known as the “Fenton Gun” which they patented on July 1, 1935. This gun was used in hunting deer at ranges up to 100 yards. It was not until 1949 that an improved version of the Fenton Gun called the “Morse Gun” was created. This gun had a longer barrel and could shoot pellets more accurately than its predecessor.
Smithfield was a small town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, located about 25 miles north of Raleigh. The town was founded in 1836 by James Smith and his wife Susannah. The first store opened in 1840. By 1846, the population had increased to 100 and the town became a center for trade with nearby communities such as Cary and Raleigh. In 1851, Smithfield became the site of the first cotton gin in North Carolina. By 1865, Smithfield had become an important cotton-producing community and its population had reached 900. The town declined during the 1920s and 1930s due to economic factors such as a lack of markets for its crops and competition from larger cities. However, during World War II, Smithfield hosted military installations including Camp Claiborne which produced munitions used by the Allied Forces. After the war, Smithfield experienced a period of revitalization that culminated in the construction of a new high school in 1955. Since then, it has undergone several name changes, most recently to become "Smith Field" within local government documents
