The town had a total population of 5,814 when it lost its status as a town to be annexed into Fayetteville in 1925. In 1924, local farmers began building homes around what is now downtown Sanford. The first home was built on Fourth Street and called "The Gables." This home remained in business until 1918 when it burned down due to an accidental fire that destroyed most of the buildings in town. From 1927 until 1955, Sanford served as the seat for County Court which moved from Raleigh to Sanford during this time period because Raleigh did not have enough land for both courtrooms and courthouse staffs. In 1956, residents voted to make their municipality separate from Fayetteville so they could have their own police department and fire department within their community; this vote resulted in the incorporation of Sanford as a city on February 1st, 1957 with a total population of 3,427 people living within its boundaries today! Since then, there has been much growth and development taking place in downtown Sanford including several new businesses opening up along 4th Street between Main Street and Park Avenue where many residents used to work before moving out into larger communities or away altogether when Cellular South moved into nearby Research Triangle Park! There are still some smaller businesses operating throughout downtown but overall there has been an increasement amounting to over 100% since 2007 when City Council started working towards purchasing additional land around Town Hall specifically for redevelopment purposes!
On November 30, 1845, Sanford was one of the Unincorporated Towns in Johnston County, North Carolina when it became a part of the newly created Carolina Territory. On December 1, 1846, Sanford was again made an Unincorporated Town in Johnston County and on May 3, 1849 it became a part of the newly created Durham County. On January 10, 1850, Sanford became a part of Wake County.
