Sanford was founded in 1795 by Captain John Sanford and his wife, Lydia. The town was named for Colonel John Sanford, a military officer who had served in the Revolution. The area that now makes up Sanford was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who were drawn to the fertile soil and natural resources of the region. In 1814, General James K. Polk invaded North Carolina and successfully characterized it as part of the Confederacy while Yankee forces marched through the state unopposed. This led to an intense battle between Unionists and Confederates in central New Bern which ended with Union troops routing Confederate forces under General Johnston retreat back into South Carolina after two months of fighting. Afterward, many Scots-Irish moved away from Sanford due to poor economic conditions and hostile environment; however, some decided to stay and start new families there. By 1850, Sanford had grown sufficiently so that a government post office was established there; during this time, local merchants began selling goods such as flour, pork products, lumber, cheese, eggs and other goods across the state line to take advantage of favorable tariff laws affecting North Carolina at the time. In 1865, when Confederate general Pendergast surrendered at Appomattox Court House following their defeat at Emancipation Proclamation hearings in Virginia (itself resulting from a failed attempt by General Robert E Lee to march on Richmond), most residents chose not to leave their homes but rather resist capture or integration into Reconstructionist America under Ulysses S Grant’s administration. A few did choose violence – including one man who killed several white men after learning they planned to burn his home down – but most citizens simply took refuge inside their homes until things calmed down outside before returning home again over the next few years. When Reconstruction ended in 1877 following Lincoln’s assassination Attempted seizures of property by federal agents throughout much of North Carolina resulted in increased violence against civilians along ethnic lines as Enforcement Department Special Agents cracked down on “ Rebel sympathizers” throughout rural areas perceived as having links with southern secessionists (largely Irish Catholics). With no end in sight for these “terrorist” activities despite numerous prosecutions within civilian courts Martial law was declared throughout much of eastern North Carolina (and beyond) until late summer 1879 following an uprising among Federal officers stationed there against Governor Tryon’s decision not To renew martial law proclamation issued days earlier amid concerns about possible insurrection if reauthorized In 1881 northern white farmers organized what became known as The Redeemer movement seeking social justice through land reform movements while black farmers supported abolitionism goals via cotton farming/trade activity primarily around Charlotte/Fayetteville area In 1886 local magistrate George White died after ordering arrest of blacks working on his farm near Needles In 1889 white mobs lynched three African Americans working for a railroad company near Durham In 1893 two white women were raped by black men near Wilmington This period is generally considered as beginningof modern day racism dating backto 1800's
