By 1925, the city had over 100 businesses providing photo supplies, camera equipment, and other photo-related products including film scanners, enlargers, copy machines, darkrooms, and more. In 1959-1960 Randolph Camera Company was founded in Sanford by Normand Randolph with a single 3x5 inch Kodak camera. The company continued to produce cameras until it merged into Eastman Kodak in 1987. Sanford is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Sanford is named after General Samuel Richardson Sanford, who fought in the American Revolution and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The first European to visit Sanford was Father Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1692. In 1765, George Washington visited Sanford while on his way to battle Yorktown. The town's first store opened its doors on December 12, 1765. The town quickly grew because of its strategic location between Charlotte and Raleigh; it became known for its fertile land and good dirt road infrastructure which made goods and transportation available easily. In 1837, General Robert Ewell Williamson built Fort Ewell near present day Garner Road and Patton Boulevard in order to protect the strategically important junction of Interstate 85 and US 421 (then called "the Turnpike"). After Confederate forces destroyed Fort Ewell in 1865 during the Battle of Gettysburg, much of downtown Sanford was razed as part of General Johnston's efforts to removing all vestige of Confederate resistance from North Carolina soil. In 1892, when white business owners started moving into black neighborhoods throughout Durham County due to railroad development nearby, they began purchasing portions of what are now parts of Sanford including Brushy Hill Road and Patton Boulevard. A group led by Jno.[sic] Pemberton donated most importantly an acreage located off Park Avenue east of Garner Road for a church school trustees could build there if they wished without having any encumbrance from white proprietors who had bought or leased that land prior thereto

In 1818, the United States acquired the territory of North Carolina from Spain, and Sanford became a part of that state. By 1825, the town had reached its peak population with over 1,000 residents. However, during the Civil War, Sanford sided with Confederate forces and was forced to leave their community. After the war ended, business plummeted and many people left Sandford for other parts of North Carolina. Today, only a few remains of the original town remain; these are located near downtown Sandford.
