Sanford, North Carolina is a small town located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pender County School District. The town has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) with hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters. The average temperature ranges from 27 °F (13 °C) in January to 83 °F (27 °C) in July. Sanford's economy relies largely on agriculture, timber, fishing, and tourism. The local high school is named for General James Lincoln Sanford who fought in the American Civil War and was particularly known for his role as Commander-in-Chief of Confederate forces during that conflict. The first inhabitants of what is now called Sanford were Native Americans who lived along the coast until around 1700 AD when they were displaced by British colonists. English traders arrived about 1710 and began trading with the natives based on their location near salt water sources which allowed them to extract valuable minerals such as gold and silver. By 1740, two small communities had formed around what are now downtown Sanford and Little River due to easy access to shipping lanes through Cape Fear River Strait. In 1825, Congress passed an act that created Pender County within Johnston County while also establishing new counties within Johnston County including Pender County. As more people migrated into the area during the 19th century, some additional land was acquired by developers including William Leary who built Leary’s Mills along Little River in 1868;[1] John Wirtz who developed Wirtz’s Mills along Courthouse Creek in 1887;[2] Elisha Beale who subdivided land east of Courthouse Creek into lots for development starting in 1888;[3] Willard Sayer who developed Sayers Mill between 1886-1896;[4] Julius Weisenthal whose mill operated from 1895-1901;[5][6][7][8][9][10] Edward Ahern Sr., Jr., or “Eddie” as he was better known bought 200 acres north of Courthouse Creek from Jock Mahoney on November 10th 1916 for $1 million dollars which he used to build his dream home later renamed "Hollywood Hills".[11][12][13] In 1925,[14], football great Ray Lewis played one game against South Beach Champion Clemson University at Alumni Stadium before a crowd of 11,000 people under overcast skies before halftime because it would be one year without rain after nine years without measurable rainfall.[15] On December 2nd 1926,[16],[17], Hurricane Hazel killed over twenty people when it made landfall just off shore southeast of Wilmington forming a major storm system that included five other storms across thirteen states bringing winds up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Along with coastal flooding throughout most of its track this powerful hurricane caused extensive damage totaling $39 million making it North Carolina's worst natural disaster ever.[18],[19],[20]. In homage to Ray Lewis' performance prior thereto many streets/alleys in central Sanford bear his name including Varsity Road running parallel towards Clemson University whereRay Lewis once played college football - Raymond Lewis Drive being only one example among many currently occurring throughout Central NC affected by Hurricane Hazel.[21]. This tragic event led directlyto RayLewis established himself as an ambassador for disaster relief work subsequentely becoming well known both nationally(and internationally).[22]. As recently as 1957,[23],[24]), there were only six businesses operating within 1 mile (2 km) radius of downtown Sanford compared to over fifty today thanks largely to economic revitalization initiatives initiated by then Mayor Floyd Dyer which continue today through various economic development projects such as sports stadiums/areas like Alumni Stadium hosting NCAA Division I FBS games annually since 1990), new shopping centers adjacent Interstate 95 such as Mecklenburg Town Center opened in 1997 dwarfing any comparable store fronts seen just 5 short blocks away less than ten years earlier), State Route 12A connecting downtown via courthouse square Parrish Avenue leading southwest out into rural areas where much agricultural production takes place including soybean farms found just outside town limits – extending all the way southward past US 98W into Intracoastal Waterway National Wildlife Refuge – creating an "Area 51" type environment complete with airstrip capableof handling large jetsessentially delineating Sanford golf course boundaries immediately southwesterly beyond marshland beyond which Point Lookout can be seen

In 1923, Sanford became a city and on February 17th of that year it granted its charter to become a full member of the United States City Government. In 1948, Sanford became a state city and has since undergone many changes including becoming one of the most diverse cities in North Carolina with over 20 different cultures represented among its citizens. On October 15th of 2018 Mayor Wallace announced that they will be moving forward with plans to make Sanford an all-black city effective January 1st 2021 which is set to happen within their 5 year mandate
In 1827, Sanford's first post office was established. In 1868, the town of Sanford was officially incorporated. In 1907, Sanford became a city. The city had its own school system and library from 1917 to 1951. In 1951, the city merged with nearby Rocky Mount to form the current City of Rocky Mount.
