Gun targets have been around in Sanford, North Carolina for over a hundred years. The first targets were set up by Colonel John Broughton during the Revolutionary War. Today, there are many businesses and institutions in Sanford that offer shooting opportunities, including two gun ranges. There are also several target ranges within the city itself. The first Gun Targets was established in 1875 by Captain Charles Hargrave of the 3rd Marines Regiment. Today, Captain Hargrave's successor is his son-in-law, Rick Stevens. The business is managed by Rick's brother-in-law and cousin, Donnie Stevens. Rick Stevens started Gun Targets after he and his wife inherited the business from their father-in-law. Donnie has worked at Gun Targets since it opened its doors in 1978. He is currently the Manager of Shooting Areas 2 and 3 which are located on Randall Road just east of Interstate 85 between Boone Lake Road and Piedmont Avenue. These areas feature a variety of platforms that can accommodate shooters of all ages and levels of experience. In addition to these two rifle ranges, Gun Targets also offers handguns for purchase as well as participate in recitation challenges sanctioned by the NRA each year during our annual Target Season event (www.nraonlinecacheusa.com/firearms/targetseason).

It is the third-largest city in North Carolina and the largest in Wilson County. Sanford is located on Yadkin River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Raleigh and 30 miles (48 km) north of Charlotte. The area that now makes up Sanford was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived during revolution times to escape British rule. The town began as a small farming community called Newtown, but soon developed into a town with a strong commercial base due to its location on the Yadkin River. In 1868, Sanford became an independent municipality under state law; it remained that way until 1959 when it became part of the newly created Wilson County. During World War II, Sanford played an important role in earning Allied victory against Japan by providing materials for munitions factories and other military activity necessary for Victory in Europe. After the war, local businesses thrived as residents vacated older housing patterns for new development near Interstate 95 and Interstate 25. Today, many people from Sanford still reside there because they can find quality jobs easily accessible outside of their home city or county government limits

Sanford was founded in 1795 by Nathaniel Sanford, a British settler. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of coal and oil on the nearby Cumberland Plateau. By 1869, Sanford had over 1,000 residents and was named one of the "10 most important cities in North Carolina." In 1915, Sanford became the capital of North Carolina.
