Sanford is a small town in North Carolina. It was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Sanford and his wife, Sarah. The name "Sanford" comes from the Santee Sioux word meaning "place of safety." The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the Yadkin River, which made it an important shipping and trade center. In 1876, Sanford became a city and has grown steadily since then. Today, Sanford is home to around 12,000 residents and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The history of Sanford begins with Colonel John Sanford who arrived in North Carolina in 1792 as part of a group of settlers led by Captain James Cook. When Captain Cook's ship HMS Resolution was lost off Cape Hatteras on October 13th, 1795, Captains John Fenton and Alexander Macomb were also seeking refuge on behalf of their men when they discovered what may have been the remains of Resolution. They set out for South Carolina but failed to find any evidence that Resolution had sunk. A few weeks later they returned home with news that their ships had foundered off Cape Hatteras but all crew survived including Admiral George Washington's flagship USS Constitution which had been rescue by another ship soon afterwards while captain Fenton took his vessel back to Wilmington. In 1836, General George Biddle established Fort Nashborough along what is now US 221 near present day downtown Sanford. The fort served as a military post until 1899 when it was replaced by Fort Bragg which still stands today overlooking downtown Sanford. In 1865 General Johnston’s army burned down parts of Raleigh after Confederate soldiers sacked that city following Confederate victory at Gettysburg three months earlier. This event helped make nearby Durham an important stopover for troops traveling southward before reaching Raleigh proper。 General Johnston decided to abandon Raleigh because he felt it would become too dangerous for anyone remaining there especially given Confederate forces activity outside the city limits including recent raids into adjacent areas such as Tryon County which had recently fallen under Union control). This article does not mention whether or not NC922 (the area now encompassing downtown Sanford) actually belonged to Fort Nashborough prior to its burning down; however this seems likely given its proximity and general destruction at hand whereas much else about Johnston's march across NC922 remain unexplained or undocumented currently barring additional research or further discovery from historians.. It should be noted that many abandoned buildings throughout town date back centuries beforeFort Nashborough even existed- some dating back over two hundred years!
