In 1917, J C Webber opened up his electric streetcar line from Raleigh to Durham via Sanford - making it possible for people living in rural areas north of Raleigh to get their groceries delivered right to their homes! In 1951, Businessman Leslie Smedley purchased all remaining stock from Webber - giving Sanford its present "market" form with several large supermarkets concentrated around downtown. For many years until about 2003, there was also an outdoor movie theater called "Theaters @ First". The last show ever played at that theater occurred on February 26th 2003 during Hurricane Katrina - resulting in significant damage done to both building and screen! Today, only a small number of storefronts remain within Downtown Sanford proper while most services are provided by major corporations such as Walmart, KFC/Pizza Hut/Cabarete’s Barbecue etc... within walking distance away from almost every household either inside or outside Downtown Sanfords limits.. In addition to its central business district consisting primarily of downtown streets leading east-west along Second Street between King Street and Chapel Hill Avenue NW., other important districts include: Northside – home to many young families moving into town after leaving rural southeastern NC during the late 1800s oil boom era; Westside – once known asSB&T Industrial Park because much production took place here before being relocated elsewhere during World War II industrial consolidation throughout eastern NC; Eastside – historically African American inhabited neighborhood bisected by Interstate 85 just south of Downtown Sanfords limits which features several high end apartment complexes housing professionals/entrepreneurs who commute daily into Downtown Sanfords core; Southside – formerly another African American neighborhood now mostly composed residences near I-85 with some commercial development scattered throughout..

The town of Sanford was founded in 1785 by William Sanford. It is named for him. The town grew rapidly and by 1810 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1813, the United States Congress authorized the construction of a military fortification in the town to protect American citizens from British attack. The fortifications were built and named Fort Worth after General David Hunter who commanded them. The fortifications served as a bulwark against British attacks until they were abandoned in 1825.
