In 1893, Sanford also became home to North Carolina's first agricultural experiment station – Raleigh Experiment Station No. 5 – which focused on increases in efficiency through research into new crops and methods for growing them. From 1916 until his death in 1938, Drs. Edwin Atherton and David Starr Jordan were students at NC State College where they developed agroforestry systems that have been adopted around the world as sustainable farming practices In 1935 both Drs. Atherton and Jordan were inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame In 1969–1970 NC State played host to Earth Day celebrations across America with events including protests against Monsanto’s Monoculture Farming System which had taken over much farmland throughout North America The event helped spur public concern about land degradation due to monoculture farming practices .
