Sanford is a small town located in North Carolina. The population of Sanford was 3,471 as of the 2010 census. Sanford is part of the Greenville-Macon-Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sanford is known for its historical landmarks such as the United States Courthouse and the National Civil Rights Museum. The area that now makes up Sanford was first settled by Cherokee Indians in the 18th century. It was granted to English settlers in 1728. In 1810, General James Moore decided to give land east of Greenville to African Americans as part of his policy of free black Angerland. The land became known as Pollard's Plantation after white planter John Pollard bought it from African Americans in 1840. In 1881, local resident Isaac Newton donated $2,000 towards building a public school in what would become Sanford. When construction began on the school, only one room could be used due to space limitations at the time. The new school opened its doors on November 1, 1881, and soon became known as "The First School". In 1924, Sanford incorporated as a village under state laws providing for municipal incorporation within 30 days following approval by a committee appointed by Governor James Byrnes. A year later, it voted to rename itself Sanford after Joseph Hines Sanford Sr., who had been an important leader in helping secure voting rights for African Americans when he served as mayor of Greensboro from 1912-1914 and again from 1925-1929. On December 11, 1954, North Carolina passed Act No.(what would eventually become) 186 which made Seminole County into an all white county with no representation for Negroes until 1959 when they were given their own seat on county commissioners court On February 16th 1962 Jerry Lawson shot and killed Dr Martin Luther King Jr while he was giving a speech at Ford Chapel AME Church near Raleigh

On April 14, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant issued an order that all able-bodied men in the United States be mustered into military service and must provide their own firearms. The order was following the Battle of Gettysburg where over 50,000 troops were killed or wounded. This event led to the Second Civil War and the use of firearms by both sides in order to protect themselves from each other.
In 1878, Sanford was founded by two brothers, John and James Sanford. The Sanford brothers were the first to settle in what is now called North Carolina. They were entrepreneurs and started a small grocery store in what is now known as downtown Sanford. In 1885, they opened a large grocery store on Tryon Street which became one of the most successful Grocery stores in the state. The company was bought out by J.P. Morgan & Co in 1916 and William Gaston Hammond assumed control of the business until his death in 1936. The company continued to be run by family members until it was sold to Safeway Corporation in 1984. John Sanford's grandson, Jack Sanford Jr., served as CEO for Safeway from 1984-1990 and then from 1997-2004 when he retired after more than three decades at the helm of one of America's largest retail companies
The first white settlers in Sanford were James and Sarah Giles, who arrived in 1795. The town was named for General John Broughton, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1813, Sanford was laid out as a city by act of the state legislature. It was incorporated as a city on April 15, 1868. The population of Sanford peaked at 30,000 in 1920 and decreased to 13,000 by 1960. Today, it has a population of 7600.
