Sanford is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. Sanford is one of the oldest cities on the east coast of America and was founded in 1739 by Scots-Irish settlers. The first post office in Sanford opened in 1741. In 1879, it became a city and was named for General James G. Blount, who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. At its peak as a manufacturing center in the early 20th century, Sanford declined after World War II but has regained some prominence as a bedroom community for Durham and Chapel Hill. The history of Sanford can be traced back to when Scots-Irish settlers arrived on what is now central Sanford Island in 1739 to establish a new settlement called Pleasant Valley. The valley was bisected by two forks: One branch passed through present day Orangeburg County and another passed through Hyde Park before reaching what is now central Sanford Island which they named "Sanford". The original inhabitants were mostly farmers who grew corn, tobacco, apples, potatoes and other crops; however, small amounts of salt water were also discovered near where today's downtown stands (now known as Old Sanfords Landing). In 1879, when Central High School relocated from Chapel Hill to become Sanford's second high school (after Carver), Sanford voters ratified an ordinance naming their city after General James G. Blount – one of America's most celebrated generals during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). As Central High School expanded into its current location on University Avenue just north of Interstate 95 within quick walking distance of most businesses and residences across town (itself only minutes' walk from City Hall), enrollment swelled rapidly from grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade until classes overflowed into both buildings - leading to then Superintendent Driscoll designating Veteran Boulevard asGeorge H White Street/Highway US 421 south(though this street name actually originated with First Lady Elizabeth Reed) When Central High School finally closed in 1978 due to budget constraints within Sanford City government - much like many other Southern towns during that era - there never really been any kind of plan or effort made to reopen/modernize/redoCentral High School – until 2003 when plans began surface for revitalizing not only that building but several others adjacent thereto associated with our rich history including: Horton Gymnasiums old gymnasium & Annexe off Administration Drive immediately east OF Administration Drive former Athletic Director’s Office & Head Start Center formerly occupied by Presbyterian church which used to house Child Development Services & Daycare Facility also located on Administration Drive next door old Post Office Building which served as Municipal Court House prior to conversion into Recreation & Parks Department facility currently housing Adult Services Dept., Law Library features 3 stories tall spire designed by noted local architect Freeman Jaffe – all while still remaining connected directly via Veterans Boulevard running concurrently alongside main artery arterial roadway originally built expressly for military access road once dubbed “Highway US 421” following victory over Mexico at battle Of Buena Vista Ridge In recent decades much attention has been paid bearish stock prices surrounding many large tech companies headquartered primarily outside major metropolitan areas throughout North America exacerbating nationwide economic woes resultant from global recession – resulting largely from demographic changes brought about mainly thru immigrants crossing international borders seeking jobs et al…..It should come no surprise then that George H White Boulevard Business District prominently home to major tech firms such as Google Inc./Apple Inc./Amazon Web Services LLC…………..In short; despite continued negative news headlines generating investor anxiety levels have remained relatively stable throughout late summer (& fall)….given current economic conditions I believe it would make more sense for Mayor Stephens team focus their efforts elsewhere especially given growing sentiment throughout our community expressing frustration with lack thereof…….–Donald W Dixon

Samuel Sanford was born in 1815 in what is now Sanford, North Carolina. He served in the Union army during the American Civil War and was wounded at Gaines’ Mill. After the war, he engaged in farming and lumbering until 1870, when he moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. Sanford became president of The University of North Carolina from 1881 to 1889 and helped establish it as one of America's leading universities. In addition, he served as a state legislator and mayor of Greensboro. Sanford died in 1904.
The history of Sanford dates back to the early days of North Carolina. The area was first inhabited by the Cherokee, who were displaced by European settlers in the late 17th century. In 1770, the British Crown granted land to Andrew Johnson, a Scottish immigrant, in what is now Orange County. Johnson founded a small town on his land and named it after himself, Sanford. The town grew rapidly and soon became an important stop on Highway 52, which connected Wilmington and Raleigh. In 1824, John Cushing sold part of his lands in what is now Orange County to General Johnston for $10 million. Johnston renamed the area Charlotte after Queen Charlotte II of England. The new county was established on July 1,1828, and Sanford quickly became one of its most popular towns. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Sanford experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing center during the period known as the Gilded Age. However, following World War I and the stock market crash that followed, Sanford's economy collapsed and it lost much of its population to retirement or relocation elsewhere in North Carolina or West Virginia.
