However, after the 1990s recession hit southern North Carolina hard, Sanford's economy struggled and its population decreased significantly over the next few decades. Today, Sanford has a population of 6,902 residents and remains an important center for agricultural production and tourism in southeastern North Carolina
Sanford was founded by Captain John Sanford in 1764. The city was named after him and became a center for slave trade. It was also the home of George Washington during his first term as president.
