Salisbury is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Salisbury River and is part of the Greenville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Salisbury was James Aiken, who arrived in 1772. He named his new community after himself, which is why it is known as "Aiken's Town." In 1807, General Andrew Jackson made a visit to Salisbury and ordered the evacuation of all Indian people living in and around the town because they were considered hostile Indians. In 1812, when Johnston's army invaded North Carolina to drive away Santa Anna from Mexican territory following their victory at Monterrey, Salisbury residents helped lead an uprising against Johnston's troops. The outbreak of the War for Independence led to increased military activity throughout Gaston County and many citizens volunteered to fight or serve in various units. By October 1861, most of western Gaston County had either risen up against Confederate forces or been evacuated during Union recruitment drives. When hostilities ceased on April 12, 1865—just days before Richmond fell—Salisbury remained unoccupied by either side. After the war ended, many of the soldiers who had fought in it returned home and began farming; however, some continued to live in tents until 1880 when saloon licenses were introduced and businesses finally became brick-and-mortar establishments with storefronts attached. The post office opened on December 1st that year and served as a stop along Route 258 until 1931 when Interstate 85 cut through town center making travel much easier; consequently business declined until 2006 when internet service arrived which revived downtown commerce somewhat but still falls far behind other towns within Gaston County having only one minor store among over 100 commercial buildings within city limits even though this number has grown significantly since then with five major stores plus two more under construction As early as 1824 there was a mill upon stream crossing just east of present day Salisbury across from present day US highway 411 south of New Market Rd Baptist Church (now known as Bayless Chapel). This started gristmills being built starting about 1830 near modern day intersection of US 421 north/southwest corner Ferry Rd (now known as Catawba Blvd) & west side old main road heading upstream past current day intersection with Old Hwy 258 south side just beyond Current Day School property line (grid lines shown). Mills were also built on upper reaches of Salisburys River starting about 1840’s including one located 3 miles below junction between SR 13 & I-85 exit 84

After brief settlements in other parts of Caldwell County, including Newtown (later Iredell), the couple built their home near present day Salisbury on Catawba Creek in 1728. They were joined by others soon thereafter and continued to develop their land until 1819 when they incorporated as a town under the name "Salisbury". In that year, they also erected a schoolhouse which still stands today within the boundaries of the current town center. The early years of Salisburys' community were difficult; however, through hard work and determination they managed to make a successful start despite numerous challenges faced during its formative years such as lowriver transportation difficulties and limited resources available for development. Through their contributions to local society and commerce, as well as their support for education opportunities for both young men and women, many salaried employees who worked for Local merchants later became some of its most accomplished citizens. A Henry Clay dedication speech given at Central High School located adjacent to what is now downtown Salisburymarked an important milestone in both local community's growth while also demonstrating just how far progress had come since those earliest days; prior thereto only boys had been able to attend this esteemed educational institution simultaneously with girls being admitted after proper parental consenting process proceeded without incident or protest from parents/guardians). In 1892, following reclamation efforts led by Governor Pleasants along with private donations throughout northwestern Caldwell County combined with initiatives spearheaded by then Mayor RichardsonDoddsthe town acquired over 9 acres (3 hectares) along Broughton River floodplain whereupon erection began immediately upon completion Of dam & powerhouse [renovation] project costing $125,-K total...this provided new power & irrigation capabilities which has greatly enhanced life & economy oftown since inception Carmichael Lake reservoir was created from Small arm creek that drained into Broughton River about 3 miles WSW original site [purchased by Town] providing potential water supply for future needs
