Salisbury is a town in Lee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1845 by Captains John Dickey and William Alexander as a trading post on the Salisbury River. In 1850, it became the county seat of Lee County; and in 1865, it became the capital of North Carolina. In 1889, when North Carolina seceded from the Union, Salisbury chose to remain withinLee County and adopted its current name. The first salvo fired in what would become World War I was fired here on November 11th 1914 by Confederate artilleryman Enoch Walls during a bombardment of Fort Donelson. The December 14th 1918 bombing of Yorktown killed upwards of 100 people and injured over 500 with only four rounds hitting their target - this attack is still considered one of history's most infamous military bombings.

The first Europeans to visit what is now Salisbury were Dutch traders who named it "Zandvoort" in 1621 on their voyage down the Cape Fear River. In 1729, Englishman John Paterson established a trading post and called it "Patoons Bay." English explorer and surveyor James Cook visited the area in 1768 while exploring the coast of North America for King George III and published a report naming many places after British explorers including Prince Rupert's Land (present-day Nova Scotia), Cape Breton Island (Cape Cod), Prince Edward Island (Nova Scotia), and New Brunswick (Newfoundland). In 1814, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Fort Fisher near Wilmington, North Carolina resulting in an intense battle that lasted three days and left over 50 dead on both sides. The Battle of Gettysburg resulted from similar circumstances two years later when Confederate Lieutenant Colonel William Crouse attacked Union troops at White Sands Landing north of Petersburg, Virginia. After years of negotiations culminating with the Treaty of Paris in 1865 which ended the American Civil War, Salisbury became part of North Carolina as part of its Reconstruction period following slavery's end. The community center was built in 1928 by local builder Waddell Hollis as a gift to his community from Ulysses S. Grant Sr., one of President Ulysses S. Grant's key supporters during Reconstruction era efforts throughout Southern United States

The base housed 1,500 United StatesAAF pilots who flew combat missions against Nazi Germany in Europe. After the war ended, RAF Salisbury reverted to civilian use and today houses the local library and community center.
