Burch also founded the First Methodist Church in 1887 which remains active today as one of the largest Methodists in North Carolina. In 1895, Salisbury got its own Post Office which remained until 1967 when it merged into nearby Greensboro Post Office

Salisbury was founded in 1799 by white settlers from Augusta, Georgia and named for General Sir Robert Salisbury who served as British commander in North America during the American Revolution. The first post office in Salisbury was established on December 12, 1810. The incorporated town of Salisbury dates back to 1831 when it replaced a small frontier settlement known as "Beaufort". In 1865, Salisbury became a city after becoming one of the original counties within the new Carolina Territory. In 1907, construction began on what would become the world's largest concrete structure – the Edmund Pettus Bridge over Broad River – which opened to traffic on September 15, 1909. In 1935, WW2 veteran and businessman Elmer Barnes donated land to be used as an open-air shopping center which remains operational today. In 1951, whenCraven County merged with Durham County to form Wake County, Salisbury became one of its five communities within Wake County. With rapid growth and development over the years, many infrastructure improvements have been made including: construction of three major highways (I-75/I-9), expansion of Randolph Park (now home to Duke University), new schools and healthcare facilities (such as Baptist Health Medical Center) – all while preserving much of downtown's historic character.

In 1951, Salhire became an independent city and has since grown into one of the largest cities in central North Carolina.
