Salisbury is a small town in northcentral North Carolina. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census and 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salisbury-Worchester-Chester metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Salisbury were French traders who stopped there on their way from leaving Canada in 1621. The town received its name from King George II of England when he granted it to Colonel William White for land grants on April 25, 1719. In 1835, Asahel Denton platted what are now downtown Salisbury and laid out streets that run northwest to southeast as well as an alley between Market Street and North Avenue which ran northeast to southwest. A courthouse was built here in 1839, followed by a schoolhouse in 1840. In 1865, a branch line of the Southern Railway was constructed through Salisbury and it became an important transportation center during this time period with many businesses located here such as J C Penney’s department store (now Macy’s) and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s warehouse complex (now Sears). In 1870, saloons were started in downtown Salisbury by entrepreneurs Thomas Gordanus and James Hargrave; these opened up until Prohibition began in 1920. By 1930, most saloons had closed or been replaced by other forms of business such as grocery stores or small shops but one still remains today -the Golden Corral restaurant - which has been open since 1933. On November 6th, 1938 Hurricane Floyd passed over Tryon County causing extensive damage including total loss of property within Downtown Salisbury along with much flooding across Tryon County including parts of neighboring Johnston County due to high water levels caused by Floyd's winds and rainfall deepest within eastern Johnston County at Swainstown where over 60% acreage was flooded resulting from more than 8 feet (2 meters) deep waters reaching some local homes inside their yards! Lee, Yankees general Howe (the author of Howe's Own Story), and Ulysses S. Grant during his time as president of the United States (1865-1869). In 1892 local farmers formed a cooperative known as the Farmers' Union Cooperative Store which still operates today - one of only a few remaining such stores in America from its heyday in the early 20th century. The store closed its doors for good on July 15, 1990 following bankruptcy proceedings brought about by economic hard times that year throughout Granville County.. In 2007 Salisbury Township trustees voted unanimously to annex neighboring unincorporated portions of Durham into their township effective January 1st 2008 Additionally Salhire Township trustees have considered annexing parts of Gates Mills into their township effective January 1st 2012 however this plan has not gained final approval due to lack of support from residents within those areas
