Salisbury, North Carolina is a town located in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,521. The Salisbury post office has been in operation since 1827. It is also the county seat of Henderson County. The first gun target in Salisbury was erected by Captain James Fayette Dixon and his men on November 20th, 1857. This target was an 8-foot (2-meter) high iron post with a 6-inch (15 cm) barrel that could be brought to bear with ease by anyone who attempted to hit it. After Captain Dixon's death in 1865, responsibility for maintaining and operating the target passed from him to his son Commodore George Dixon Jr., who lived in Salisbury until his death on October 15th, 1897. Captain James Fayette Dixon had originally come to America from England when he was only sixteen years old and had become a naturalized American citizen three years earlier. He played an important role in building up the military forces of both countries during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1847 he served as captain of Company K1st U S Artillery at Monterrey Bayou where he won distinction for bravery under fire while suppressing Native American insurgents as part of General Don Carlos Ruiz's army marching against Mexico City. In 1850 Captain Dixon moved his family permanently to Salisbury where he began accumulating land around what is now downtown - including present day Second Street - which would form the nucleus of future salem businesses such as Prentiss & Gamble furriers and jewelers; J C Andrews hardware; M G Waddell transportation services; R B Hattenheimer lumberyard; A G Burch grocery store; L N Brown brewing company; and Eusebius Waddell carpenters and Joinery School No 1 until finally being dissolved as a separate business entity known as "Waddell Brothers Carpeting Warehouse" on July 1st, 1907 when all its employees were transferred into Brother John Waddell's shop at 301 Maple Street within walking distance of their original home on Second Street! It should be noted that one significant early resident of this town was Colonel Robert Easley Sr., who purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) surrounding present day downtown Salisbury just east of US Highway 421/I-95 about two miles west of Interstate 95 junction point with I-95 exit 20A – thus forming much later Graham Air Force Base – making him one of just five landowners within two miles (3 km) radius owning contiguous land across I-95 junctions outside Richmond County limits back then! Colonel Easley also donated $10 per acre ($200 total) towards founding Drury College Preparatory School adjacent to today's Drury University campus southwest corner First Avenue swarming with parking lots for students attending local high schools grades 9 through 12 over 60 years ago today! With help from General Motors (later Ford Motor Company) lobbyist J.P. Morgan, James Wilson helped get GM building a $5 million plant at nearby Darlington in 1923; this event is sometimes referred to as "the Birth of Chevrolet." Smithfield Foods began production there in 1913 as part of what became known as "Gaston County's First Factory". Today's downtown area was developed between 1915 and 1925 when NC Steel Corporation built a steel mill on Canoe Creek within city limits; today's Archbold Street Bridge connects downtown with Sayre Industrial Park across town east of Interstate 85/ Yadkinville Road outside the City Limits boundary In 1924, Gaston native Harry Ladd established an ice cream business near present day Willoughby Avenue and Old State Road 421 while living in Charlotte; he renamed it cones & cups after his hometown which he had visited many times while stationed at Fort Meade during World War I In 1938 Salisbury incorporated as a town under State law No. 625 In 1948 creation of Gaston County allowed racial integration following passage of state constitutional amendment #1 In 1950 consolidation with Randolph county resulted in salutation to Gastonia by then Mayor Ladd In 1955 incorporation into Gastonia gave rise to question over naming rights for new courthouse since same address would serve both towns (& Signers Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church looked like an integrated church from 1951-1957). Finally resolution passed allowing either name but decided on Salisbury because more historical significance
