Salisbury is a small town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Salisbury were Spanish soldiers who landed on the coast of North Carolina in 1559 and named it "Punta de la Cruz". A Jesuit mission was founded in 1607 by Father Domingo de Salazar and Brother Antonio López y Zúñiga. The English captured the town from Spain in 1714 during the Seven Years' War and renamed it "Salisbury". In 1849, General James K. Polk traveled through Union County while campaigning for president and discovered that many people were unemployed because of a lack of railroad supplies coming into the area. He ordered Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W) to build a line to Salisbury and connect it with Wilmington, NC so that jobs could be created for locals. Construction began in 1851 and finished five years later. The town soon became known as one of N&W's most important stations due to its location near both Wilmington and Raleigh-Durham. Salisbury also played an important role during World War II as a manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location at milepost 9 on routes 132 (now I-95) and 4 (now US Route 401). Many Allied forces stationed here during World War II including tanks, fighter aircraft, artillery pieces, trucks, locomotives, bridges built here, food products made from cornmeal USA Today reported that "the output of munitions plants in Salisbury alone amounted to some $225 million throughout World War II."
