Salisbury is a small town in North Carolina, located in the Granville County area. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Granville County. Salisbury is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is home to Duke University, Wake Forest University and UNC Chapel Hill. The first people to live in what is now Salisbury were Native Americans who lived on the Moanalua River. They hunted and gathered food from the local animals and plants. In 1775, Englishman John Noble landed on a farm near present day Salisbury and founded Noble's Plantation on land that he had purchased from the Moanalua Indians. The land around present day Salhire was first settled by Europeans in 1802 when Captain James Aiken purchased two tracts of land which he named "Fulton" after his friend Charles Fulton, an American Revolutionary War hero. Captain Aiken built a house on one of these tracts which served as his new home until 1815 when he sold it to George Horry for $1,000 cash. In 1840, Henry Clay Jr., then a Congressman from Tennessee visited Fayetteville and saw an opportunity to develop what he thought would be an agricultural region within his stately district called Cumberland Gap because there was no market for produce in that part of North Carolina at that time. He bought 640 acres (256 hectares) near present day Salisbury for $3 per acre ($16 per hectare). This purchase created much controversy as many doubted that Clay could actually build anything practical using this amount of land without help from others in order to receive reimbursement for his investment. However, Clay followed through with his promise to build a road through Cumberland Gap should he be elected Governor of Virginia in November 1840; this road became known as "Clay's Road". When Clay died suddenly less than two months later after being elected governor with only 50% of the vote against incumbent Martin Van Buren (the other candidate received 50% of the vote), most experts agreed that Clay had been assassinated by someone within Van Buren's campaign team or forces loyal thereto – although there was no concrete evidence linking any individual or group directly to Clay's death campsag

Salisbury is a town in eastern North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. Salisbury was founded in 1792 by settlers from Charlotte and has been occupied by humans since before that time. The first white resident of Salisbury was Samuel Johnston, who came with his family in 1792. Salisbury's first store opened in 1801. In 1835, two brothers named John and James Flanders built a log cabin on the bank of the Neuse River to house their cattle and sell watermelons from their wagonwheel stand. They were among the first residents to grow crops and raise livestock in what would become Salhire County. A post office called Salisbury was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1953. In 1870, Jeptha Vaughan bought land east of present-day Salisbury Creek for $1 per acre; he began developing it into what is now known as Vaughn Park (named for him). By 1880, Vaughn Park had a sawmill, grist mill, cotton gin, blacksmith shop, grocery store and 30 homes. By 1930 there were 2 churches (one Lutheran) 4 schools (grades K-12), 6 businesses (3 stores & 5 restaurants/bars), 36 residences (& 14 apartments) and an estimated 10 million virgin cotton plants growing on 176 acres (+/- 3%). In 1941 local resident Beulah White dedicated her home "Salisbury" to honor General Douglas MacArthur during World War II as a symbol of appreciation for his service to our country during that time period After World War II ended general MacArthur returned home to Palmdale California where he died on December 15th 1946 aged 94 years old The townspeople then donated all remaining property including 16 apartment buildings which still remain today within its boundaries
