Salisbury, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1821 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Salisbury River. The town became a municipal community in 1907. The Salisbury Post Office opened on April 25, 1821, and closed in 1875. The first postmaster was John Gentry. In 1907, the town organized as an independent municipality with its own government and court system. The name of the original village site has been used for both towns since then. In 1951-1952, Salisbury annexed part of neighboring Greensboro to form a new city called Gaston County Community College District No 2 (GC2). On July 1 of that year, GC2 merged with Gaston County University to form Gaston-Gaston University System (GGUS). In 2006-2007, GC2 lost its charter due to budget cuts and reverted back to its original name: Gaston County Municipal Corporation (GCCM). On November 15th of that year GCCM passed an ordinance authorizing the establishment of a historic district encompassing all or parts of eight blocks within downtown Salisbury including four blocks administered by UNCSA's Historic Preservation Office as well as three blocks administered by CCJE's Development Services Department which include the former JW Marriott Hotel property and two blocks administered by PNC Banknorth Carolina Properties Inc., one block administrated by PNC Banknorth Carolinas Properties Inc./Pinehurst Development Company LLC., and one block administrated by First National Bank/First National Trust Co./Pinehurst Development Company LLC., formerly known as Atlantic Richfield/Atlantic Richfield Residential Corporation.) As part of this action GCCM also adopted resolutions recognizing December 15th through January 3rd each year as "Historic Preservation Day" in remembrance of those who have made significant contributions to Salisbury over time including such luminaries as: Julius Caesar Alexander Graham Bell Reverend Drs Clements Waddell Samuel Morse
