In the early 1800s, a group of men in Salisbury, North Carolina decided to start an arms Manufacturing business. The men named their business "The Discovery Armory." They continued to make and sell firearms until 1852 when they folded due to lack of sales. However, the discovery of oil in Salisbury during the late 19th century led to new gun manufacturing opportunities for the town. In 1892, a company was formed by two local men named W.F. "Doc" McCoy and J.C. Weller called "Weller & McCoy Arms." The company made revolvers and shotguns until 1916 when it became part of the National Firearms Association (NFA). Today, there is still a small amount of guns manufacturing activity in Salisbury with companies like Brownells making handguns and rifles as well as Osprey Ammo making ammunition.

Salisbury is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Fort Meyers Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury's history dates back to 1792 when it was founded as a small settlement on the western edge of what is now McDowell County by James Robertson and other Scots-Irish immigrants. The town grew rapidly through its early years as a result of its location on the main trade route between Charlotte and Raleigh. In 1849, Salisbury was incorporated as a village under the name of "New Salem". After incorporation, New Salem experienced rapid growth and development due to its location on high ground near two major roads - I-64 and US 421 - which facilitated easy access to both national commerce and transportation resources. In 1887, Salisbury became one of nineteen towns in McDowell County (along with Rocky Mount, Mooresville, Gastonia and other smaller communities) that were consolidated into the new county government under Secretary of State John Gaddis. This consolidation marked an important change in McDowell County's history because it gave rise to larger towns with more centralized government control over their affairs while still maintaining some degree of autonomy within their own jurisdictions. As a result, Salisbury had greater opportunities for economic development than any other community within the newly formed county government. One such opportunity came about due to the efforts of local businessmen who invested in developing property along I-64 northward from Salisbury into Johnston County. This new development helped spur further growth in the town; by 1920, Salhire had reached an population size of 3,500 people. During World War II, much effort was expended by local residents to support military endeavors throughout eastern North Carolina; during this time period, many businesses closed their doors due to wartime demand for goods and services unavailable from elsewhere in the state. However, despite these challenges (and some negative aspects), Salisbury did not suffer economically from war-related manpower shortages or production constraints; instead, many locally owned businesses continued To operate until well after hostilities ended in 1945. In contrast thereto were most regions across eastern North Carolina which saw severe damage and destruction as a result of combat; although many businesses reopened following hostilities' endl , many others failed completely due to lack of available labor or technical assistance during peacetime reconstruction efforts Unable To reopen
