The Salisbury Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was founded in 1909 by a group of citizens who were concerned about the state of firearms in North Carolina. The club developed an interest in firearms, and soon began to promote responsible firearm ownership and storage. In 1925, the club organized its first gun show, which attracted many interested individuals from throughout the state. In 1933, the club donated a rifle to the local police department, which helped make them more efficient in their law enforcement activity. The club also sponsored annual 4-day campus shoot at Blue Mountain Gap National Park in 1934. This event helped teach children how to responsibly use firearms and help keep our state safe from crime.
Salisbury is a small town in North Carolina, situated on the Cumberland River. The population was 5,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury is home to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Salisbury State University. The area that now comprises Salisbury was first settled by Indians in 1776 as part of what would become known as the Catawba Confederacy. The town was founded by Colonel John Sevier after he purchased land from the Cherokees in 1781. A post office been established here in 1811, and when Raleigh became the state capital in 1837, Salisbury became its seat. In 1871, it was made a city and remains so today. The first settlers to arrive here were white men who had come overland from Georgia during the American Revolution as part of General James Robertson's brigade of troops looking for new homes for their families. They built log cabins and started a ferry service across the river to get goods to Market Street near present-day downtown Salisbury (then called "John Sevier Square"). In 1834, Admiral John Cushing laid out what would become downtown Salisbury on land granted him by Governor David Jones . This gridiron plan followed that used streets leading east-west and north-south with two blocks wide each between them; business districts were located around major thoroughfares like King Street or Meeting House Square (now Washington Avenue). By 1830s most residents had left for Raleigh or other nearby towns because of malaria outbreaks brought about by mosquitoes carrying dengue fever which then killed many people quickly in this region; however doctors soon found ways to prevent this from happening again using treatments such as quinine which prevented typhoid fever from spreading very easily through contact with blood) Downtown businesses prospered until World War II when they all moved away except one store which reopened after 1945 - now known as The Overlook - because of its location across Johnson Street from Ulysses S Grant Park (later renamed George Washington National Monument). Salisbury was founded in 1796 by Captain John Skinner and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the Salisbury bluegrass area in North Carolina. In 1834, Salisbury became one of the original Towns in Wake County, North Carolina. In 1868, it lost its charter and became a Borough. The borough was dissolved in 1969 and its boundaries changed to include the current towns of Salisbury and Townsend. In 1984, the town of Townsend annexed part of what is now Salisbury. The town's history can be traced back to 1796 when Captain John Skinner and his wife Susannah founded Salisbury on the banks ofthe Neuse River which forms the eastern border of present-day Townsend County. At that time, this area consisted primarily of rolling hills covered with live oak trees which gave it a high degree of privacy as well as providing excellent hunting grounds for game animals such as deer, hogs, rabbits, squirrels and other small mammals. It took many years for these new residents to build homes or start a businesses because there were no roads or access to water resources at that time. However, over time they did manage to create a nucleus around which their community gradually grew together until finally becoming an incorporated municipality on Feb 12th 1834 under the name "New Hanover Township." The township quickly began expanding eastward into present day Brunswick County due largely to its good quality soil (which had been brought over by earlier settlers) as well as easy access to natural resources such as watermelons and rice paddies from various areas around town which made living here very comfortable for early American settlers who were used to colder climates where winters often lasted six months or more without measurable snow cover! This also allowed early inhabitants within our Town limits an opportunity to participate fully in local government affairs through voting even though they lived outside our Municipality boundaries! On July 1, 1775, the Continental Congress created the present-day state of North Carolina by combining two existing British colonies, West Virginia and Georgia. The vote followed a recommendation by John Dickinson, then the chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. The region now known as North Carolina was traditionally part of Appalachia and had been sparsely populated. The new colony would be located in what is now central Forsyth County and its capital would be Charlotte. The area that is now North Carolina was first explored by Europeans in 1607 when Spanish explorer esquimaux named it La Florida after a local chief. In 1728, Englishman James Cook sailed along the coast ofNorth Carolina looking for trade routes to India. He named it Carteret Island after Sir George Carteret who had led an expedition there in 1624. In 1775, during America's independence from Great Britain, delegates from each colony voted to create their own state within the new United States.
