On May 11, 1826, Salisbury became a county seat with the creation of Lancaster County. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1827 and served as the court house until it burned down in 1888. A new courthouse was built on High Street between 1865 and 1870 and served as the court house until it also burned down in 1888. The present courthouse was completed in 1907 and serves as the town hall today. Salisbury has seen some major changes over its history including being renamed from "Nicholas Woodruff" to "Salisbury" after General Robert E Lee during World War II; becoming an open-air shopping mall called The Mall during the late 1960s; experiencing a decline during the 1990s due to commercial development around it; returning to its original name following several years of revitalization beginning in 2006;and most recently experiencing significant growth due to new construction around it which has led to increased traffic congestion within downtown Salisbury but also helped increase property values overall. An important event that took place within this history include when General George Wallace's motorcade drove through town on his way to attend a rally at UNC Chapel Hill on October 15, 1968 while supporters chanting "segregation now!" surrounded his car outside of Town Hall

A new courthouse designed by noted architect George Bulfinch was completed and dedicated in 1893; it currently houses the offices of the Town Council. As an agricultural community, Salisbury played an important role during both World Wars I and II; many prominent citizens served in military service or were involved with industry or agriculture during those times. After World War II ended, many residents left for various reasons (the Cold War led to a decrease in population) but some returned over time while others have remained away since then; today's population is around 6,000 people who are all descendants of early settlers who arrived during that time period.. The village center had been abandoned when I-75 was constructed through town upon their departure from what had once been their homespun way of life; however recent efforts by volunteers have seen preservation work done on several buildings within walking distance including an old mill complex which still stands despite being extensively damaged by fire years ago; also nearby there are several churches dating back to pre-Civil War days: First Baptist Church (founded 1793), Methodist Episcopal Church (dedicated 1865), Presbyterian church (1868).
