The area was known as the “ Powder Mill District” for its many powder mills and other manufacturing facilities used to produce firearms and other munitions. Ammunition production began in 1812 when a small factory was built on the river by John Wilkes. The mill produced cannon shot, ball bearings, rifle bullets, and mortar shells. In 1819, a new factory was built on Roanoke Island by Benjamin Atlee. This factory manufactured rifles and artillery projectiles for use in the American Revolution. In 1865, the last gunpowder mill in Salisbury closed due to lack of demand from Confederate troops during the Civil War. However, over time other manufacturing facilities have been established in Salisbury that continue to produce firearms and munitions today. Ammunition production began with shot (small rounds of lead or saltpeter), balls (gravel-and-ash rounds), rifle bullets (fired from muzzleloaders or smoothbores), mortar shells (fired from cannons or mortars), and even primitive rockets! during the Revolutionary War era there were many different types of ammunition beingproduced including: flechettes (arrowheads made out of thin metal rods twisted around each other) which could be fired at close range; tripods; grenades; sling shots; arrows tipped with sharpened stones; catapults; boarding hooks used to haul artillery pieces up hillsides for positioning against enemy positions; harpoons – used by Native Americans as well as white pioneers during colonial times for fishing expeditions off Cape Hatteras

The first permanent settler in what is now Salisbury was John Robinson in 1819. He named his land "Robinson's Ridge." The town was platted in 1827 and named for Samuel J. Salisbury, a congressman from North Carolina who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1865 to 1867 and 1870 to 1875. The post office has been open since 1830. In 1905, Salisbury became a city under state law by combining its two townships into one entity.
