Salisbury is a small town in Guilford County, North Carolina. It is located on the border of Buncombe and Lenoir Counties and was once the home of America's first airgun range. The town was founded in 1892 by C.B. Nichols, who built a sawmill on the Salisbury River to provide lumber for his gunnery business. In 1912, Nichols donated land to build an airgun range on which he served as president from 1922-1928. The range became one of the largest in the United States, with over 1 million rounds fired between 1924 and 1958. In 1962, Salisbury voters passed a resolution asking the state legislature to make it a law that all citizens must carry firearms within their city limits. The state legislature did not pass this request, but in 1976 passed a bill allowing residents to carry handguns without permits if they registered with police before September 1st of each year. This law remained in effect until it was repealed by Governor Pat McCrory in 2016 because it conflicted with new state gun laws that went into effect that month. Today, Salisbury is home to several businesses that sell guns and ammunition online or through telephone sales; as well as two military ranges (one traditional). Salisbury is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is the largest community in Vance County and one of the most populous towns in eastern North Carolina. The name "Salisbury" comes from Old English meaning "settlement by the Salmons." The first European settlers in what is now Vance County were attracted to its rich coal seams and potential for lumber production. In 1827, John Fenton organized a group of men to purchase 2,000 acres (0.8 km2) of land along the Catawba River east of Salisbury for $1 per acre (0.50 m²). This land became known as Fenton's Landing and later as Salisbury Landing Plantation. In 1838, Isaac Carney founded Carney's Mill on the present day corner of West Main Street and Market Street in Salisbury. This mill produced flour for local residents until it was destroyed by fire in 1881. In 1865, James Aiken purchased 100 acres (40 ha) northeast of downtown Salisbury from Mr. Hargrave for $5 per acre (0.30 m²). Aiken named his new village after his maternal grandfather, George Washington Aiken Sr., who had served as governor of North Carolina from 1861-1865 and had helped found Davidson College near Greensboro, which became Davidson University in 1905. By 1880, several businesses had opened up around downtown Salisbury including J & G Wholesale Grocery Store (), Mrs Wickie's Bakery (), R W Neely's Drug Store (). By 1890 there were 10 stores and over 100 people living in downtown Salisbury with a population of 1,500+. In 1901 an addition to this early business district wasbuilt on what is now Elmwood Avenue - The First National Bank (). After World War II many small businesses closed down or moved out due to competition from larger banks or tractor companies . By 1985 there remained only two restaurants open - Captainunk's restaurant ()and Local Tavern (). It wasn't until 1990 that Amtrak began using sawmills located northeast of downtownSalisbury to make their horseshoes products which continues today
In 1792, the town of Salisbury was founded by Col. John Salisbury on a tract of land grants from King George II. The town served as the county seat for Rowan County until 1834. In 1835, it became the capital of North Carolina and remains so to this day. On April 15, 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked and captured Salisbury after a two-day siege.
