This event led to increased tensions between North Carolina and Virginia and made it difficult for both states to trade goods with each other effectively which led to economic decline for both parts of America during this time period In 1870, Rev Granville Pemberton purchased 2,000 acres (10 km²) of land near Rocky Mount from Colonel Samuel Ashe for $1 million dollars Pemberton began construction on what would eventually become known as "Pemberton Park" which included a botanical garden, horseback riding trails, a gymnasium/batting cages area, rifle ranges and an amusement park called "the Domain". The park opened to the public on July 1st 1893 underwritten by James Fenton MacLaren Sr., father of future journalist James Fenton MacLaren Jr.. After years of development work by Pemberton's son Rev Granville Pemberton III (1902-1996), major components such as all sidewalks within walking distance have been installed throughout much of downtown Rocky Mount while efforts are ongoing to restore significant portions of MacLaren's original estate totaling more than 21 acre (.75 km²).
