Rocky Mount is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocky Mount was platted in 1837 and named for General James "Hickory" RockyMount. The first post office in Rocky Mount was established in 1838. It changed its name to Rocky Mount on November 15, 1840. The first store opened in RockyMount on October 12, 1840. In 1848, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Rocky Mount by Ephraim Denny and his sons Charles and John Denny. They became known as the Dennys Brothers Saw Mills Company which operated until 1978 when it merged with JB Hargrave's Mill Company to become Tyson Foods Incorporated. In 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Ambrose Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a long battle against Union forces near Rocky Mount. He died there three days later from wounds received during that battle. In 1865-1866, the Battle of New Market fought between Union troops under General Robert Ewell and Confederate troops under General Jubal Early took place near Rockymount while Union troops were attacking Fort Fisher offshore off Cape Fear River Naval Base; this event is also considered to be one of the decisive battles of the American Civil War because it ended effectively Confederate control over North Carolina coastlines east of Wilmington and put an end to their attempt to build an impregnable fortress along/near Cape Fear River Naval Base

The area now encompassing Rocky Mount and much of Wayne County was part of Cherokee Nation until the Indian Removal Act of 1838 led to the displacement of most Native Americans from their lands in what is now Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Many Scotch-Irish immigrants who had followed the Indian Trail settled in what is now Wayne County beginning in the late 1800s after finding favorable conditions for farming there. By 1910 Rocky Mount had a population of 3,000 people living primarily on cotton plantations. However, during World War II Rocky Mount played an important role as a munitions production plant for General Motors Corp., which helped support Allied combat efforts while homegrown industry produced food products that were essential to American war effort. During the war it also saw military training facilities used by the Air Force; these included Camp Blanding (later Battle Mountain) near present day Rockymount and Camp Beall (later Fort Bragg) on nearby Newcastle Island. After World War II ended cowboy culture began to take hold in many parts of America as automobiles replaced horse-drawn buggies as transportation options; this led to increased speculation around downtown Rocky mount with dozens of small businesses opening up along Highway 7 between 1945 and 1951 when Interstate 95 was built through southern Wayne County providing access to new markets.
