In World War II, Rocky Mount played an important role as a naval airbase; it was here that U.S.AAF pilots flew bombing missions over Germany during World War II. Afterward, much of what remains today of this military significance passed away when Rocky Mount transitioned into a small rural community with high school students being its only residents until after 1985 when – due to state laws forbidding towns from having more than fifty buildings – Buncombe Tech Community College moved into what is now downtown Rockymount from its previous location on Colleen Drive near Presentation University (now part of Campbell University). Today's economy relies heavily upon manufacturing: Among Buncombe counties' five largest employers are IBM,[1] Coca-Cola Refreshments,[2] and JBL.[3] Although many businesses have closed or relocated since 2000 due to budget cuts enacted by then–Buncombe County Mayor John Swanton[4], several hundred jobs remain in downtown Rockymount[5][6].
