Rocky Mount, North Carolina is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. Rocky Mount was founded in 1884 by brothers J.D. and Wm. Ladd as a sheep-raising and wagon-driving community on the eastern edge of what is now Rocky Mount Township (17 miles [27 km] east of Asheville). From 1902 to 1914, the post office at Rocky Mount was called "Athens". In 1912, a group of businessmen led by Tilton Glass developed an electric power plant in Athens that generated electricity for local lights and cooled water for residents; it became one of the first commercial plants in the area. In 1916, George Pemberton purchased land west of Athens and began developing it into a small city with water supplies from two wells; he named it Rocky Mount after his home state of West Virginia where he had been born in 1872. By 1920, Pisgah Avenue had become one of Rocky Mount's most important thoroughfares with businesses lining both sides thereof from downtown to rural areas. One reason why Pisgah Avenue became so important was because it connected all these different areas without going through downtown which made transportation easier and allowed businesses to remain open longer periods without running out of customers or having to close early due to lack of available resources

It is bordered to the north by Gastonia and to the south by Raleigh. The town began as a Methodist congregation in 1837 and became an incorporated community in 1850. By 1860, it had a population of 1,200 people. From 1903 until its incorporation into Tyrrell County in 1907, Rocky Mount was part of Gaston County. In 1990, Rocky Mount became a component city of Raleigh-Durham. In 2000, it merged with Durham to form the new city of Durham-Rocky Mount. One notable resident of Rocky Mount during its early days was General James Longstreet who served as commander general for Confederate forces during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 including two terms as governor of North Carolina before he joined Longstreet's unit in 1863 and led it through Battle Creek Campaign and Overland Expedition against Ulysses S Grant's Union army
On July 1, 1861, North Carolina became a state in the Union. It was one of nine states that seceded from the United States in the American Civil War. The battle of Rocky Mount took place on August 14, 1861 near Rocky Mount (now Yadkin County) in western North Carolina. Union troops were retreating from Confederate forces led by General Robert E. Lee. Confederate General John C. Breckinridge ordered his cavalry to pursue and kill any Union soldiers who ran into town. As the Union soldier exited the courthouse building, a Confederate horse came up behind him and killed him instantly with a single shot from his carbine.
