The Rocky Mount Area Transit Authority (RMATA) is a public transportation system in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The RMATA provides bus service to the city of Rocky Mount and its surrounding suburbs. It also offers commuter rail service to Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill. The RMATA was founded on October 10, 1951 by the merger of two predecessor agencies, the Meredith Street Railway Company and Armstrong–McGee Railway Company. In 1955, it became a municipally owned agency with equal rights with other local governments in North Carolina. On May 1, 1966, the RMATA suburban services were merged into the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area Rapid transit service operated by UNC-Chapel Hill Regional Transportation Commission (RTC). In 1984, when UNC Chapel Hill began its own medical school campus northwest of town and north of Interstate 85, it required that all buses within a radius of its campus stop at the nearby Riverside Park bus stop. This necessitated increased bus usage on routes serving UNC Chapel Hill compared to those served by other agencies within RMATA jurisdiction. To accommodate for this increase in traffic congestion on arterial highways near UNC Chapel Hill Campus, DMAC Services Incorporated developed a new technology called "smart transportation" which uses information from various motor vehicle detectors along roadside roads to provide real-time predictions of wait times for specific types of vehicles while they are travelling through intersections or other point(s)of contention during peak periods such as rush hours or during special events like football games or concerts. This technology was first used on December 9th 2008 when DMACservices inaugurated their new express route #5 between NC State University - Greensboro Coliseum Station and Durham Bulls Athletic Club golf course - Buena Vista Drive NW during PNC Game day Traffic Congestion Avoidance Zone Operations.(See map)

Rocky Mount is named after General James Micawber who fought in the American Revolution andowned an estate there. The first European to see Rocky Mount was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he explored the coast of present-day North Carolina. He called it "Rochester's Head" because of its high mountain peak, which he sighted from his ship ashore on Catawba Island. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Rocky Mount were white farmers who arrived around 1820 and named their community "Mount Carmel". A post office was established in 1827 and remained in operation until 1940. In 1830, Robert Stephenson built a steam locomotive engine at Swenzer's Mills for the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad company. This railroad became part of the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) in 1881; Rocky Mount was incorporated as a town by act of Congress on March 3, 1840. At that time, Rocky Mount had a population of just over 100 people and consisted mostly of farmers living near the mill sites along Big Creek and Blue Ridge Pike. During World War II, Rocky Mount played host to various military installations including Fort Bragg (now known as Camp Bragg), NC Air National Guard Station Stonecrush Air National Guard Base (now known as Robins Air Force Base), Plantation Army Ammunition Plant #1 (now known as White Sands Missile Range), Naval Support Activity Beaufort NAS Beaufort SC (#2) Today much redevelopment has taken place with many new businesses opening up here such as Barnes & Noble bookstore chain store
