Rocky Mount has seen lot's of growth over the years; however it has always been able to maintain its identity as a small town . In recent years though there have been efforts made by locals to bring more attention to their town while still being able to live relatively peacefully .
Rocky Mount was originally called Rocky Fork by the Cherokee, who named it for a mountain in Georgia. The first European to visit Rocky Mount was Captain John Lawson in 1765. He named it after his home of Rocky Ford, Tennessee. In 1814, General James McDowell and his army came through this area and camped on the north bank of the Holston River near what is now Rocky Mount. McDowell named the river after himself. The town of Rocky Mount was founded here in 1824 by three white men: Enoch Snow, James Fenton, and John Blythe. It became a small town with about sixty citizens when it was burned down by Confederate forces in 1865 during the American Civil War.
